I know that when I was a puppy I heard another act sing "Did She Mention My Name." I'm talking late sixties, early seventies here. It seemed much slower than GL's version, but when I heard GL presumably for the first time, I almost remembered it and could almost sing with it.

So who did it?

I think I've heard Mac Wiseman sing it, but it wasn't slower. It was the 1st track on the entire CD. It was played on the same music note as the Gords Gold recording(A) and not the original(G). I think it was Mac Wiseman, anyway.

Anne Murray had a hit with that song, except she turned it into Did He Mention My Name. That's the first version of it I heard.

According to www.lightfoot.ca, country singer Bill Anderson did a cover of it. How far it got up the charts, I dont know.
Google is wonderful. You just type in "singers of did she mention my name" and there it was!

And Rob if you Google for "did she mention my name" you will find a parody of DSMMN
at:- http://www.toddbutler.com/clinton.html
I also found a useful "Iceberg" site http://www.theiceberg.com/artist/957...lightfoot.html
with thumbnails of many GL albums several of which link to pages containing links to albeit
undoubtedly short real media clips of songs on that album
so if there are songs you have never heard they might be there.
You have/half to register (FREE) before you can actually play any clips but
if you then scroll down to the very nice Bear family DSMMN/Back Here On Earth plus bonus
double album or click this link:- http://www.mymusic.ca/product.asp?my...ghtfoot%2Ehtml
you can hear reprentative 30 second clips of all that albums tracks
including:-

Are you paying attention Dunkin' Douglas??

May I

and my own original GL favo(u)rite
"Spin Spin"
I also searched the great site that features Canadian singles charts http://www.webfitz.com/lyrics/freefind.html
Are you paying attention Walter Borderstone??
and found no mention of Bill Anderson's version nor when I then searched for his hits

Actually.... I remember now.

It wasn't a hit version I was hearing. And I wasn't a child. Young yes, but not a child, actually a teenager.

My first husband used that song as one of several charms to reel me in. He used to play it for me on his guitar. Yes, slower. I gradually started to remember that he never could quite get the chords right on the title line. He kept backing up and singing the words "by the way" twice.

Sometimes I think I married his guitar, not him. He was actually quite talented and could make his guitar do everything but the dishes....

In a weird, roundabout way, my children might not exist if it hadn't been for GL. Strange to think about.
