I can help you there, Borderstone. Starland Vocal Band (their one-hit wonder song was "Afternoon Delight" for those of you of a certain, um, vintage) opened for John Denver on his 1975 tour. And for good reason: Bill Danoff and then-wife Taffy Nivert, SVB members, cowrote "Take Me Home, Country Roads" with John, a HUGE hit for him. Danoff also wrote another Denver song, "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado" and the SVB group were signed to Denver's Windsong Records. SVB never went anywhere but Danoff continued writing songs and John's career took off a second time after an early stall post Peter/Paul/Mary recording of his "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (originally titled "Babe, I Hate to Go", and if you can find one of the 250 or so copies of that, you've got a rarity.)

Hi Auburn Annie
I think John Denver is a notable influence on every folk music lover. I will look back at his songs and see what was country and what was folk. I will publish my findings here soon. God Bless John Denver, the free American spirit.

At this time on the Country Music Television Cable Channel, they're airing a look at the career and life of John Denver. I never knew he had so many problems. Especially that he would cheat on Annie! That's a disillusioning thing to discover. I know even if I was that famous and had women surrounding me,i I had someone waiting at home I'd never betray that trust. I know you all out there will tell me that it's easy to say when I'm not in that situation but I never say anything that I don't mean unless I'm joking around with someone. I don't dislike John Denver any the less for it but I wish I didn't know that about him. It's been me,later!

Hi Watchman
I read responses from many Prine fans in this website. I never heard of him before. I will look him up in the music shops here in Jacksonville FL.
I guess Stevens is Cat Stevens?. If so, then many Gordon fans nominated Cat Stevens as favorite folk musician. I am fan of Cat Stevens myself but never considered his music folk. I think the strings are the main factor here. By the way, I am a fan of all your selections.

Yes, Cat Stevens. I bought John Prine's CD "Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings" and love it. I first heard his name mentioned in an Everclear song and my curiosity got the best of me.
I just picked up a new Johnny Cash release called "The Mystery Of Life" and in the liner notes, John Prine is credited with some accoustic work.

A few messages back Rod McKuen was mentioned. I was in a record/book store today and saw an $8 copy of "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and I looked on the back of it to see who sang that title song and it was Rod M. I almost bought it for that reason but I knew I couldn't spare the money for something that's kind of frivolous. Maybe next time. Been me,later!

Just as well. He's a phenomenal songwriter, but his voice . . . eh, well, it's an acquired taste.

Thanks for the reply Violet! (Hmm..A Charlie Brown reference. ) Actually, the song I mention above is the only song I've heard by Mr. McKuen. From that I think his voice is somewhat on the soulful side but I wouldn't make that a definete statement.///On another thing altogether: I recently acquired a CD by John Denver. It's one of those el-cheap-o knock offs but it's kind of interesting. It's called The Best Of John Denver but it's actually him doing new versions of some of his classics and some of his other songs. The real highlight of the CD is the song,"For You". That song was actually released as a single in 1996 and I had the chance to buy it but unexplainably,I chose not to get it. Had I known it would be his last single ever,I would have got it then. Well,I have it now and as for the re-makes? Well, the young vibrant energy and heart felt belief in what he's singing seems much less,in fact, even the happier songs sound sad. Except,Thank God,I'm A Country Boy (another re-do but done well.) It's been me,later!

I used to like Bob Dylan, but now I am fed up. After all these years, here are the folkies I like the best:
Gordon Lightfoot
Joni Mitchell
Eric Andersen
Simon & Garfunkel
Shawn Phillips
and - I had to add him - Neil Young

Club47,what caused you to be fed up with Bob Dylan? It's not because he won an (c) Academy Award is it?

Hi Gwyn Snyder
Shawn Phillips was the first 12 string album I heard and owned. This of course was back in 1973. He played very heavy cords and his song were very unique. I have not heard of him being mentioned in the music world until now.
Is he English? and I wonder if he still produces new stuff.
