Valerie is right, you don't mute the E string when playing the A chord that way.

A modified way would be to barre the finger as Gord's doing in the photo and tuck your second finger in on the B string. That can help you from muting the high E. When you can play it with just the single finger you're OK. When you can do it on a 12-string, consider the chord "conquered."

Jesse, on the index free G you can play the 1st and 2nd finger positions of a C chord while keeping your bass G and or your high G. Your 4th finger can also slip under your 3rd finger on the bass G to add the standard bass C of the C chord. IYCRMM uses that chord and as I'm sure Cathy can tell you its how you play Travis style on Simon and Garfunkel's The Boxer.

Well, I play The Boxer, but in my own Travis style, where I sometimes play two or three strings at a time. It's a very strange style of picking. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else do it like me. Not that I'm a virtuoso, or anything. I didn't have a teacher, and that's just the way I taught myself to Travis pick.

I used to play the A chord with my 2-3-4 fingers but now use the half-barre with my index finger. I don't even remember why I switched.

I play the G without my index finger--that way I can use my index finger to add the 6th or 9th, plus it's easier this way to change to G7, C, or C/G.

j-joe, thanks for that chordfind.com link...i never even saw that this is what started your thread in the first place, i just jumped right to the pic and quiz...that inverse lookup is great, can now relax the brain a bit more when trying to figure out what claw position i've come up with...in the past, some patterns i could never give a name to...and today, neither can chordfind.com, lol

rmd, i didn't realize your signature was a personal link - quite enjoyed the full length listens and definitely simple, very tasteful album sleeve design...i still like the term 'album'

btw, i missed the suspended sentence wit... after i'd read it i paused, tilted my head sideways and just thought, "gee, this guy really knows his theory!"

I did not mean to deceive. I gave up caring about the names of chords many moons ago. My motto is: if it sounds good, it IS good, whatever it's name may be. I've stumbled upon some good fretboard friends that way.

Relative to the capo, it's a B minor. If he wasn't using a capo, it would be a C minor.

If you look at any sheet music books, they'd say something like "capo on 2", and they'd name the chord a B minor.

I agree with the "relative to the capo" aspect. However, if he is using a full barre on the 4th fret the capo becomes irrelevant and the chord would be a C# minor or Db minor, (or whatever the heck you call it). It would not be a C minor, with or without the capo.
