There is a line in GL's tribute to Stephen Foster, 'Your Love's Return'that sometimes literally chokes me w/ tears...'I must be forgiven now'. That line and the soft gentle way GL sings it cuts though me and my soul like a knife. I have all kinds of problems w/ forgiveness anyway.

"If Children Had Wings" kind of gets me too because I think of how innocent I was when that song was out in '78 and how little i knew about the real world.
Then I think about how childhood has changed in the past 15 years or so and I feel sad for those kids who are growing up too fast. ..or not at all. Okay,I have to stop typing .

I have quite a few polyester items in my closet too...I'm just holding out for some day putting my iron away for good!! lol

I can fill up on a lot of Gordons songs...that one especially....I love that guy!! If I went to one of his concerts, it wouldn't be to hard to spot me...I'd be the sobber!! lol

In response to the original question. "Brave Mountaineers" from DQ brings tears to my eyes. It is certainly not a melancholy song by any stretch, but GL captures the essence of a happy, rural childhood like I experienced and the fond memories come flooding back. Happy tears they are.

Oddly, Drink Yer Glasses Empty, puts a lump in my throat.

I guess because my dad and father-in-law were both in WWII in the RCAF. Both lucky to get back in one piece. I see pics of my dad as a young boy, all of 19 years old, climbing into his big 4-engine Halifax Bomber. I see my father-in-law climbing into his Spitfire ... and I wonder ...would I have had the courage to do what they did voluntarily?

Today they are both still here -- one 81 and the other 87 -- both mere shadows of the men that I knew as vigorous and strong ... that is their bodies, but there souls and spirits are still 20 years old despite the lines that time has etched on their faces.

Every day that goes by I say thanks to them and the 1.1 million Canadians who served in WWII. We were a country of only 11 million people at the time -- over 10% of the population served. We lost more people per capita to WWII than any other country excepy Russia.

Rona, first, it's not ignorant to ask for something when you aren't sure...anyway, these are some of the words I know for sure, at least the first verse and chorus:

Debra,I saw Patti Page on PBS earlier this year on one of those 1950's music specials. She sang that song as if it were still the early 1950's!

It was extremely moving,not just for the lyrics but in seeing the folks in the audience that are my Mother's age & up. They looked so happy to see her up there,like they were in a time machine or something. (at the same time.)

Even more touching that night was another singer from that time Gogi Grant (not her real name). She had a huge hit in 1956 with,"The Wayward Wind".
Pat Boone introduced her and out strolled this now 80 year old woman and she sang it and sounded almost exactly like the record I 1st heard all the way back in 1972 at age 4! I got "misty" in my eyes. ...and I'm not even of that era.

Gotta look for that PBS thing.

I figure I've sung that song across the yrs almost as often as dear Ms Page. Loved it each time. And I could do a mean waltz when I was 10.

Maybe the two finest hit-record-type waltzes from the 50s are The Tennessee Waltz and Waltz Across Texas. Patti Page & Ernest Tubb. Oh, my!
