hi Tim, interesting analogy (re whole words versus letters)
...it's very much like phonetics and how we speak in terms or emphasis, cadence, metre, whatever....way back, our band conductor explained 6/8 as a compound time signature

the example of the Wreck intro shown in 3/4 vs 6/8 is about as clear and visual as I could drum up ...i prefer the score in 3/4, with twice as many measures...quarter notes are easier on these eyes

Hi jj,

that's what I get for skimming I guess. Must have bleeped right over your explanation or I would have said something like "what jj said." I really do think that 6/8 tunes have a distinct "feel" though. Consider irish jigs for example. I can't think of them as being in 3/4 time.
