Hello,
I was recently in Canada and heard Sundown performed in French. Does anyone know who this female singer is and how I can get her CD?

two clues (not)
It is unlikely to have been K.D.Lang
neither is it likely to have been Cathy's favo(u)rite Quebecois chanteuse- she with the long nose and face

Are you sure it's a Canadian artist and a recent cover? It could be, of course, but it could also be Nana Mouskouri who recorded it in French many years ago (along with Song For A Winter's Night in French and in English). She records in Spanish too, and I think Italian, German and Greek as well. I can't remember what her native tongue is, but I think she sings in all of them with perfect accents and is probably fluent in many of them. She is an international star, just not known particularly in the US. But her music may be played on the radio in Canada.

I don't know if any of the Lightfoot songs she recorded has made it onto CD. Somebody sent me a cassette copy of just the Lightfoot songs many years ago. I don't know where that cassette is and haven't found the songs on CD. It's tough, however, because the titles in French aren't literal so unless there is a clip or you really think about it, it isn't easy to spot the songs.

UPDATE: Ah - I found them.

Sundown is called L'amour C'est Comme L'été (Love is like Summer ). Although it was released on several CDs, I don't see any with the song at Amazon.

SFAWN is called A La Porte du Jardin (At The Garden Gate), and has not been released on CD (in French). The English version is available.

In both case, the French lyrics are entirely different from the English, unlike Lightfoot's own Nous Vivons Ensemble which was beautifully translated.

It's not KD Lang, 'cause she can't sing in French.

It's not that long nosed *#$^#, 'cuz she can't sing.

Nana is a huge entity here in Canada - tickets to her shows are sold out very quickly as we have a huge Greek population here in Toronto. she's a wonderful talent and in whatever language she sings it's always beautiful.

i would agree that Nana can sing in over 10 languages but K.D Lang could of also done it in French.

Cathy, Is the 'long nosed '#x###' you are speaking of Celine Dion? .

Strangely, it wasn't until Jim Steinman produced several of the songs on her "Falling into You' album that I became a fan of hers. I love "It's All Coming Back to Me Now'and "Mountain High' - both produced by Steinman. I think he wrote IACBTMN. But then I am an ardent Jim Steinman fan and have been since his "Bat Out of Hell' days with Meat Loaf. I know that CD annoys a lot of people but a lot of people must like her work also. She is not exactly starving! "To each her own' and all that.

Sir John suggested I do this but I am not sure it will work. If it does, let me explain this pic was taken last week when I interviewed Nana Mouskouri, who is currently touring the globe on her farewell tour.

somehow I managed to miss your original unsuccessful attempt Bru so I do not know myself what error you made that the moderator spotted and edited for you. which was all the more inexplicable because I had emailed you the exact link including the vital UBB img tags and all you then had to do,I fondly thought was copy my link and simply paste it in (it could be you did what I admit I sometimes have done which is to highlight a phrase like that then manage to omit the first character i.e I have found myself pasting in a link starting with plain img because I omitted to highlight and then copy the vital, initial [.
Hence as a matter of course I nearly always use the preview function to see what appears and edit/correct my syntax before posting a reply.
Although to be honest I do this more because my initial inevitable typos usually stand out more in a preview!!!

i agree that it was probably the Nana version - according to www.lightfoot.ca , these are artists who've covered Sundown:

SUNDOWN
American Pick Hits Band
Atlanta Connection
Jo Basile & Son Orchestra
The Brothers Four
Curly Chalker
Clawhammer
Ray Conniff
Larry Copen
Joe Dassin
Daryl Dodd
Lonnie Donegan
John Driesen
Elwood
Walter Erickson
Percy Faith
Ray Griff
Hangman's Daughter
Larry Hansley
Tommy Hill Music Festival
Thomas Hilton
Peter Hofmann
Dieter Hufschmid (German)
Internet Tribute II
Ed Kuepper
James Last
Laurie Bower Singers
Living Trio
Trini Lopez
Nana Mouskouri (French)
Nashville Country Singers
Nashville Sax
Perry Novak / Bob Volkman
Odyssey Studio Artists
The Other Company
Clay Rains And The Henchmen
The Ranch Hands
Ron Sexsmith
Smash Hits Country Style 4 (South Africa)
Sonny, Hal & Weldon
Sound Alike
Studio Musicians
Sukasambe Hit Parade (South Africa)
The Tom Fools
Peter Vee Sings (South Africa)
Liedjies Vir Almal (South Africa)
Robbin Wakefield
Scott Walker
Kai Warner Orchestra
Jesse Winchester
Mac Wiseman
Zip Code Rapists

what an honour Bru! great shot also, when are you going to post the interview at your cool site?

Dion, looking forward to the film, the actress portraying her really has some of those passionate characteristics down pretty good, lol (but obviously not the infectious phrasings and dynamics) she's gets by with her English versions but her French recordings are the ones that will endure/go on...) i find her and Alys Robi stories intriguing - Celine, i'm available for golf anytime (on your backyard course!)

ahh, Steinman, he along with Elton, Hodgson/Davies were big mentors of mine back in teens - just saw Class Albums goodbye yellow brick road, some great footage of the non-hits from that gem - but Class Albums bat out of hell is a fave, Steinman intro on piano to the title track to start the show takes me back to my first listening of that album, infectious raw piano throughout, love to hear the bedding tracks with just Roy Bittan on the ivories plus ML lead vocals (my taste would prefer the backing vox on the entire album scratched) along with some of the signature Todd tidbits - yes, another ardent fan here, ELizabeth...'you took the words right out of my mouth...' (love that simple clever lyric and catchy hook)

sorry for digression, back to Nana and Gord - we really need to see a Classic Albums episode for the Sundown LP - we requested a GL stamp about seven years ago and it happened so I believe anything's possible when you cross your fingers the right way and hold it long enough (even if it does affect your guitar picking )

anyhow, Melodynotes, i think we can rule out the Wiseman version

looking fwd to it, bru

more than her voice, i love her mind and heart

so many pondering quotes, ie:

"when I am confused or tired, I think about what I can cook. It takes you away from everything, as you are thinking only of your dish"

she must know how to focus, i think creating recipes is so analogous to songwriting, and then repeating the succesful ones and serving to company is like the singer/songwriters giving a performance of their collection, complete with a subtle change here and there...wish i cooked more
