Hall of Famers not done with NHL

Front office beckons for Francis, MacInnis, Messier and Stevens

THE CANADIAN PRESS Published Tuesday November 13th, 2007
Appeared on page B3

TORONTO - Their stellar playing days made it an easy choice for the Hall. But their hockey careers are far from over.

Ron Francis, Mark Messier, Scott Stevens and Al MacInnis entered the Hockey Hall of Fame yesterday in their first year of eligibility, automatic inclusions that surprised absolutely no one.
And they're not done writing their hockey stories.
Francis and MacInnis are already actively involved in the next chapter of their hockey lives with NHL front-office positions, while Messier and Stevens are contemplating following their lead.
"It's the love we have for the game and the passion we have for the game," said MacInnis, vice-president of operations with the St. Louis Blues. "The game has been so good for all of us over the last 25 years that we feel we can maybe give something back to the game, give back to our respective organizations."
The millions of dollars they made as modern-day NHLers could afford them a work-free retirement in some exotic locale. But hockey's in their blood.
"Everything I have in my life is because of the game," said Francis, now assistant GM and director of player development with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Darryl Sittler is a fav to many Maple Leaf fans. Down here it is quite obvious. A guy I know named his first born, Darryl some 20 + years ago. And his licence plate reads SITTLER.

Norm Elmhirst & Darryl Sittler

I like Don Cherry, he says it like it is. Dont alway's agree w/ him but he's pretty honest.

We have a Don Cherry's here in Dieppe {Moncton} NB. And he drops by once in a while...

Some years ago he was at the restaurant, and the media were asking him questions. One guy asked if he could imitate Ron Maclean, which he replied, " No I can't, because I dont look like a nerd."

Many Canadians would really want him as Prime Minister...

Well I don't drive so I can't get a license plate but 23 1/2 years ago I named my son after Darryl Sittler..
caused a bit of blushing for Mr. Sittler when I introduced him to my son about 15 years ago...

Im sure Paul my childhood buddy, we were from the same neighbour hood, who got to meet Sittler a few times, must have done the same as you. His son and yours must be around the same age, two Darryl's...

Great game tonight Charlene, Price in goal for my Habs...

congrats....yes, their HOF induction is good news
the real good news is this means it's time for me to liquidate their rookie cards

they used to be sentimental keepsakes but then someone offered me $50 for one
i said, "really? a crisp $50? ok, deal...heck, it's a freakin piece of cardboard!"

btw, jjo, i miss the days when the habs were THE habs (ie. flooded with french guys like the Laperierres and Lemiers) ...not the Markovs and Kovalevs ...oh well, same true pretty much for the leafs

jj (aka cherry jr.)

pa) man, i hope i age as well as Sitt!
