I am constantly amazed at what Google searches produce as a by-product.
Just now whilst innocently searching for GL lyrics I found a site no doubt some here are already well aware of:-
http://www.rhapsody.com
And of particular interest to us:-
http://www.rhapsody.com/gordonlightfoot/more.html
which features an extensive bio and this

"Hey! Start Playing Now, It's Free.
Join Rhapsody®. It's FREE!

Ready to listen to 25 full-length songs each month and tune in to 25 non-stop digital
music channels - for FREE? There's no credit card required and absolutely no commitment.
Just type in your email address, create a password and download the Rhapsody Software.
(Available only in the U.S.)."
It is part of real.com so be prepared for annoying unwanted shortcuts and random popups
I set up an account using just my email address
I then received a "getting started" email which informed/confirmed
"Thanks for choosing Rhapsody. Now you can browse millions of songs in the Rhapsody catalog, customize channels, share playlists, and play 25 tracks each month for free. Plus, you can download tunes for only 99 each"
and
"Find & Play Your Favorites
With access to millions of songs, finding the music you love will be easy. And every month, you can play 25 of your favorites free. Simply use the search field to quickly narrow your choices by Artist, Title, Album, Keyword, or Composer. Then just click "Play." "
I found a link to download the rhapsody player , only 16.3MB 50+ minutes on dial-up dammit

The GL page I referenced above says in part

It's easy to listen to full-length tracks, not 30-second samples, free on Rhapsody Online. Here's how:
1. Click a play button 2. Download the Rhapsody Player 3. Listen and repeat"
"Gordon Lightfoot Must Hear Tracks"
Explore all 47 available tracks by viewing albums on the left
with a "must hear" list as follows
1. Anything For Love
2. Too Many Clues In This Room
3. Wherefore And Why

an interesting cocktail to be sure
There is also this more extensive list if you select the option
"Most played"
1. Me And Bobby McGee
2. I Used To Be A Country Singer
3. I'm Not Sayin'/Ribbon of Darkness
4. Early Mornin' Rain
5. Wherefore And Why
yes the selection surprised me too!!
But what a great way to introduce a friend to the Lightfoot Magic
And 25 songs is pretty near a full 80 minute CD's worth. A theme I hope to return to soon.
On the GL page I also noted this graphic:-

clicking the "why" link above caused this pop-up

which in turn as you can readily see links to
http://www.savenetradio.org/
which sports this graphic:-

And yes it works, after downloading and installing the rhapsody player I was able to make this screenshot of the player
in action

(they have "15 albums and 47 tracks" of GL to choose from)
but the selection is patchy and somewhat random
(several albums have only two tracks available WFY has only "Ring Them Bells and "Wild Strawberries" but not the sublime "Restless" and at least one has only one track
Gord's Gold merits a bare 2 and GG2 just the one INSTC
http://www.rhapsody.com/goto?rcid=tr...0&variant=play
still it's a potentially useful website in my book

John,
I don't know if you've seen the iTunes store for Lightfoot. It's very well done--here is an image from it. (Click link to larger image)

Yes N_S and thanks for the suggestion I used the itunes store back in 2004 to download Inspiration Lady before Harmony was released. But I have to admit that in general I am sorry to say rather suspicious of most things associated with Apple (and real Networks come to that) because their software has a to me distressing tendancy to try to insinuate themselves onto your computer. For example using
my latest recommendation for the task of grabbing Youtube videos in flv flash video format:-
itube

the actual download of itube is from:-
http://www.benjaminstrahs.com/download/iTube_Setup.exe 2574KB
I was delighted to find that that nice little program, automatically after downloading converts the flv file to mp4 format but then not best pleased to find that the itunes player is unwantedly opened (I much prefer to standardise on playing video files with Windows Media Player thank you very much in fact itube seems to make a pathetically poor and essentially useless job of the conversion to mp4)
No what I thought was most noteworthy about Rhapsody was that one can actually listen to 25 songs per month for free, once you have installed the necessary player, and once you have sorted out how to record anything playing on your computer's sound system you could amass quite a collection of recordings for free
