Default CBC Archives

Has anyone checked-out the CBC Archives website? http://archives.cbc.ca/300c.asp?id=1-68-743 I just enjoyed looking through "Gordon Lightfoot: Canada's Folk Laureate", a collection of 11 TV clips and radio interviews, plus some other links. One vintage TV clip was shot in Orillia and features commentary by his dad and mom, or "mum" as he says in his Canadian style. In another one Bob Dylan presents Gord with his award when he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame back in the 80's. It runs the gamut from the late 60's up to his recovery from the aneurysm in 2004. Gordon has often said he doesn't do television, at least not U.S. TV, but it would appear he's been on Canadian TV and radio quite a bit. As someone living in the States my exposure to him has been limited to radio airplay, albums and concert appearances, so it was refreshing to listen to him talk at length in the interviews and see the television clips for the first time. Just thought I'd pass this on.

Isn't that site great? I spent quite awhile a few days ago listening and looking at the clips. I really enjoyed listening to his interviews. A different perspective!

It's an Apple and it says that some kind of plug in is missing to play the files. I have no idea what that means, of course.

Kerstin,

Give us a few more details. There are several of us who use Macs. I have had no problem playing the files.

What operating system are you using? Give us the details of your set-up and who you are using for an ISP.

Hi Doug,
I don't know the next best thing about computers, but when I try to play the file it says Safari can't find internet plug in and something about not being able to view MIME files.
My computer is a powerbook G4. Don't know if that helps. My service provider is Yahoo DSL. Is that what you meant?

Under the Apple menu (Top left) the first menu item should say ABOUT THIS MAC.
What does it say the Mac version is? That will tell me/us what Operating System you're using. If it's 10.3.xxx you may need to update to 10.4 to be able to view the videos.

Another option would be downloading and installing the FireFox browser.

Yes knowing you have a DSL connection helps

Jeeez, this thread is starting to sound like Gordon Lightfoot's MAC IT chat room, LOL. Hope you are eventually able to view the GL videos Kerstin, no sarcasm intended.

I have revisited that great Archives site and was dismayed to find that one of the best videos has been pulled
I had saved the notes as they appeared a few years ago
"FILENAME: Country Hoedown Oct 1962.wmv
Square Dancing and I'm The One - Country Hoedown 1062.wmv
The Story
Gordon Lightfoot is gaining prominence as a member of the song-and-dance troupe the Singin' Swingin' Eight on the CBC's /Country Hoedown/, a popular musical-variety show. In this television clip, "Gordie" Lightfoot and the cast tear up the floor with a square dance routine. Once he's done hoofing with the group, Lightfoot takes centre stage. He sings the haunting "Remember Me (I'm The One)". "Remember me, I'm the one who hurt you, dear," croons a handsome young Lightfoot.

- "Country Hoedown" was a hugely popular weekly program that ran on CBC Television from 1956 to 1965. Lightfoot appeared on the program over 200 times between 1960 and 1962. Other regular performers on the program included Tommy Hunter, Tommy Common, Al Cherney, Johnny Davidson and the Haymes Sisters. The program was eventually replaced by /The Tommy Hunter Show/.
- In a 1997 interview with Pamela Wallin, Lightfoot talked about his time as a cast member on the show: "It was the first steady job I had, so I was quite appreciative."
- Lightfoot originally wrote /Remember Me (I'm The One)/ for Tommy Hunter. Lightfoot recorded it himself in 1962 and it became his first song to reach the top 10 on the Canadian charts.

Credits
Country Hoedown Broadcast
Date: Oct. 19, 1962
Medium: Television
Duration: 00:04:04
Program number: B-00234"
of the 4:04 about half is of Giordon clearly identifiable doing his square dancing "a la main droits" then the remainder is a very sweet video of a young Gord probably also in 1962 performing Remember Me (I'm The One) which was at number 3 that July
The CBC site still has the picture that linked to the video

screenshot from the video

and using the wayback machine to find archived copies of the site found one from february 2004 at
http://cbcarchives.notlong.com
from where I found the link to the video
which at the time was a file titled clip2 but that filename and its position onthe page has now been reallocated to the superb very early CRT "musical" clip so presumably the CBC have removed the original Hoedown video due possibly to some copyright issue??
