*#*$!!!! Now I know the reason why I didn't see this show -- I can't stand Buck Henry (he was the host). Gord was, apparently, the "musical guest," whom they usually don't promote as much as the host. Aagggrrrhhh!! Can anyone over there tape it?? How do we do this? Who would know how to do this so anyone else could get copies? Hmmm... I'd pay BIG BUCKS! LOL

It would be interesting to see if you get the whole show up there complete with John Belushi cutting Gord's guitar strings and the band performing Spanish Moss
as per Wayne's page:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/tvappear.htm
and not the curtailed version that only included the Summertime Dream section when re-aired on the E channel some time ago
John Fowles
I like the way your kisses flow and I love your Spanish moss

So, did anyone here see that episode when it aired? I wonder... was that a set up gag or did Belushi do that on the spur of the moment? And how did Gord react?

from the looks of it they are only showing one hour of the 90minute show so I'd say that only one of the songs will be broadcast. It aired several months ago as well and when it did they had only one song.

It would seem taht it was a set gag because Gord's "acting" skills at the cutting of his ggetar strings were questionable at best!
lol

jj - very odd that when I clicked on this post I was listening to Spanish Moss.....
spoooooooky!
lol

gordon looked a bit suprised when it happened but on the other hand, it also looked a bit "staged"

According to the Lightfoot biography I just acquired a few days ago, that show aired May 22nd,1976...not long (either before or after)the albums release.

He sings Summertime Dream and Spanish Moss and one other that I can't remember just now.

At the end of the segment it appears he's goin to do another song and Buck Henry tells him they have to get on with the skits and Gord kind of refuses.

Then along comes Samuri Belushi with bolt/wire cutters and clips GL's strings! I couldn't help but laugh, especially at Gordon's comic reaction.

Anyone find it bizzare that these two very different guys dated the same "strange" woman?

yeah, that's spooky, char (or a huge coincidence since i know you (and i) loop his entire song catalogue everyday )

jf, if it's like the one hour version they showed a few times when i used to watch those reruns on the Comedy channel, they included both tunes (and the WEE bit of Sundown he started playing before he got 'cut")

that was staged for sure, lol...no way GL would let someone come that close to his guitar with those shears, otherwise, well imo

sheryl, that GL archive is not very rare among the internet crowd (and non-internet GL crowd) ... i know i have it a few times already in high quality recording but i have a labelling prob with my collection and can't find stuff when i want it handy ... email me if your other sources dry up and i can hunt over the next few monhts

ps) how come Elvis Costello (who i like) got 2 appearances selected for the 25 Year SNL DVD Music collection? was this voted on or something? i FFed thru many of their selections (with the exception of the Spice Girls, lol)

edit: yeah, only 2 songs per http://snl.jt.org/ep.php?i=7605220

ps2) B, i don't find it all that strange in that all 3 were right out of their minds at that time

I agree, it must've been staged. From what I've heard of Gord's temperament, he'd lose it when the sound wasn't right -- someone mess with his geetar?? NO WAY!! I'd looove to see his expression.

jj, I have the same "labeling problem" with my old VHS tapes -- my labels keep falling off!! But, I'll check around, thanks.

Borderstone, I think I know now why I missed that episode. Even if I had known Gord would have been on, that night was my PROM NIGHT!! I graduated high school the next month (6/76). So, well, shoot, I made my choice <sigh>, and I muffed it. LOL

I have the whole thing taped and it was without a doubt staged. You can tell before Belushi even came out that Gord was expecting something. There is no way anybody would cut the strings on his guitar without him agreeing to the joke. Back in the day I bet Gord would have knocked Belushi out cold if it wasn't staged.

i dont know about that. Gordie's body language said John was a complete purprise and he just said that as a joke. He was furious back stage.

Who said what as a joke? And how do you know he was furious backstage? (This is a kindly, but, curious question!!) I imagine those shears could have damaged the guitar, let alone the strings which are easily replaced. Well, o.k., it's a pain in the butt. I used to watch my mom change a few of hers.

Lest we forget,Gord looks right at the camera at he end of this in mock surprise & confusion,it's so obviously staged!

Buck Henry's dialouge to Gord seems unconvincing to me for that matter. What the heck was he famous for anyway?

I'd like to say in my book he's famous for being annoying, but, I think he was a comedy writer, wasn't he? Also, thanks for the info regarding the set-up. I've been on pins and needles!!

A question for those who think that was not staged. Would you like to sit down for a few games of poker? We won't even play for a lot of money, but I guarantee I will walk away with all of it.

well, do you or don't you know about that? i think body language is a part of acting, no?

i can believe Gord was furious but probably about who knows what else, lol ...i really think Gord was wonderful with his performances but could do without the skit (he was probably just a good sport to go along with that idea, did that Buck dude write that? ) ... i don't find most of their skits very funny but i've had a few chuckles over the years in an idiotic kinda way ...i'm mainly there (if at all) for the music, which is often slim pickins as far as my taste runs ...but it's a classic programme for sure

ps) thanks for the added BDay laffs Sheryl, lol... i really don't want to bring that kind thread back to the top or i'd add my follow up to it ...and Annie, Char thanks for the tips also but i'm still infected for sure...btw, i do have a mac G4 and spend most of my computer time on it (i usually just creep online or to email while i'm waiting for rendering) when i get a chance, but i don't choose to put it online at all ...for one thing, too much uncopyrighted stuff on there so i just use the dinosaur method and transfer stuff to this Windows craptop/laptop if i need to distribute something quickly, otherwise i just enjoy using the post office...ok, ramblin'

...thanks again (btw, oddly enough i am not an Elvis fan in the least...i can hardly take looking at ben mulroney, lol)
