memorial for 4 RCMP officers

Memorial service in Edmonton, Alberta for 4 young Mounties killed in the
line of duty last week is being broadcast live across Canada now. Ian Tyson,
who lives in Alberta on his ranch will sing 4 Strong Winds during the
memorial.
All of Canada mourns these 4 young men. Law enforcement representatives from

Ian has just finished singing - with 4 large portraits of the officers behind him...just him and his guitar...complete silence....hard to listen to the words when they take on this new meaning....I'll never hear "4 strong winds" again in the same way i used to..

Susan did a beautiful rendition of "Songbird"...

Ian is one of those guys who wears a cowboy hat and looks great - and still looks great without it...

G'day jj,

this photo touched my heart. I didn't know something about this accident with the four Mounties. Can you tell more or give a link to read more about that. In my part of the world you can't read this kind of news.
What about the song you have mentioned "songbird" ?

I live in Edmonton but was not able to attend. Still the service as shown in extended reports on the news was very moving. I saw bits of Ian Tyson, Susan A., and Tom Jackson singing (Tom sang Amazing Grace accompanying himself on a small drum), as well as comments by Paul Martin, Ralph Klein, and speakers on behalf of the bereaved families. In all the coverage that I have seen, the media has been very discreet in not sensationalizing the disturbed person who did the killing. That investigation is always covered separately.

The four officers were so young. One had been married only since Nov/04, one with his wife was expecting their second child, one was a young guy who asked long ago to be buried with some potato chips and a flashlight...so very human and so honorable to choose such a difficult and dangerous career.

I recorded the whole service. It was very well done and respectful of the families and colleagues. Like you say the broadcasters were low-key and kept the humanity of the event centered on the men who were murdered. So much sadness and hurt, it will take a long time for the families, friends and colleagues to learn to live with the pain...
I wish them peace.
