Anyone catch David Letterman's monologue on June 5. He made a reference to the recent terror arrests in the Toronto area.

Letterman said something to the effect of they are aware of Al Queda's leader in Canada: Gordie Bin Laden.

Ah, our hero and legend is still revered by many, although not directly.

I always knew Letterman liked GL. He mentions him every now and then. I was surprised he didn't make it to Paul Shaffer's indictement to the Canadian Walk Of Fame. It would have really been something, because he keeps a low profile. But working with Paul all these years, I thought he was going to make an appearance. Guess not. Damn I didn't get to see this episode. Thanks Seafarer 62, for the news.

Charlene, how do we spell Schaffer. :D lol

I was wondering if the Letterman quip might also be a reference to Gordie Howe. Am I safe in assuming Howe and Lightfoot are the two most famous Gordons ever to come from Canada ?

Letterman refers to al lCanadian men as Gordie-and yes Howe would be one of them!

From the Home Office in Wahoo, Nebraska,
it's the Top Ten List for April 9, 1997 Top Ten Canadian Complaints About Americans

10. Won't acknowledge enormous cultural contributions of Howie Mandel
9. We're pretty sure they're holding Wayne Gretzky down there against his will
8. Every time we mention the city "Regina," they won't stop giggling
7. Incredibly, they only have one word for "snow"
6. In American encyclopedias, Canada often called "North Dakota's gay neighbor"
5. They call it American cheese, even though it was invented by Canadian superstar Gordon Lightfoot
4. They've never even heard of our most popular superhero, Captain Saskatchewan
3. Two words: "Weird Al"
2. Sick of that gap-toothed loser on "The Late Show with Paul Shaffer"
1. Not enough guys named "Gordie"

Every now & then when Canada gets brought up on any talk show, they usually put Gordon Lightfoot in their monolouge.

Funny were mentioning Paul Schaffer because i was 'cross town yesterday at one of my many used record store stops & I saw a 12inch vinyl single of Paul's lone 80's solo release,"When The Radio's On".

Tempted to buy it but in recent months,I'm more into collecting the top 40 hits of,well, just about anybody! Rather than the rare oddities like that one.

By the way, anyone recall Paul's short lived CBS sitcom in the late 70's called,"A Year At The Top" (?) He and Greg Evigan play two musicians who sell their souls to become rich, famous rock stars. Anyone? :D
(Bad as it sounds! LOL! )

Thanks for the info Charlene. I was unaware that Letterman used "Gordie" in a generic fashion.
