Canadian labels unite to release
a star-studded tribute to Canada’s
greatest songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot
The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, Ron Sexsmith,
Cowboy Junkies and Bruce Cockburn are among
the artists who have recorded Lightfoot songs for
the first-ever salute to Canada’s premier songwriter
Borealis Records, Canada’s pre-eminent folk/roots label and NorthernBlues, Canada's cutting-edge blues label have combined forces to release “Beautiful: A Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot.” The upcoming album will be released in Canada, the United States, and a number of overseas markets, on October 7 this year.
Some of North America’s best-known roots and blues artists produced and recorded their own interpretations of some of Lightfoot’s best-known songs.
The Cowboy Junkies open the album with “The Way I Feel” and are joined by a cast of performers that include The Tragically Hip, who recreate “Black Day in July,” Blue Rodeo, with one of Lightfoot’s earlier songs, “Go Go Round,” Murray McLauchlan, who essays a personal solo version of “Home From the Forest.” and Bruce Cockburn who delivers a soulful version of “Ribbon of Darkness” — the first Lightfoot “hit” recorded by Marty Robbins.
Other Lightfoot hits are here too: “Sundown” (Jesse Winchester), “For Loving Me” (Terry Tufts), “If You Could Read My Mind” (Connie Kaldor) and the classic “Canadian Railroad Trilogy.” from Canadian folk hero James Keelaghan.
Ron Sexsmith — who once lined up to get Lightfoot’s autograph — performs “Drifters,” while other artists include Blackie & The Rodeo Kings (“Summer Side of Life”), guitarist Harry Manx (“Bend in the Water”), Quartette (Song for a Winter’s Night”), and Maria Muldaur (“That Same Old Obsession.”)
The CD closes with a simple salute to the songwriter. “Lightfoot” is sung by Aengus Finnan, a young singer who represents the new generation of Canadian songwriters who regard Gordon Lightfoot as an artist who broke boundaries by writing songs that were uniquely Canadian, and that remain influential, and enormously popular, today.
The principals of the two labels are delighted that the project — which has been in the making for almost two years — is finally about to be released. Said Grit Laskin of Borealis: “Gordon Lightfoot is the most significant figure on Canada’s folk scene, and has been creating wonderful music for well over 30 years. Canadians — and many others around the world — know so many of his songs.” Fred Litwin, who heads NorthernBlues, added: “This has been a labour of love for both labels, and the willingness of all the artists to get involved shows how grateful they are to Gordon Lightfoot for the music he created.”
Surprisingly, this is the first album that’s paid tribute to Lightfoot’s astonishing catalogue of songs — which are still available on almost 20 different albums.
The salute is being announced a week after it was announced that Lightfoot
has been appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.
“Beautiful” has been executive-produced by Colin Linden, and will include a 20-page booklet. A special series of events is being planned to coincide with the release of “Beautiful” in early October. The album will be distributed in Canada by Festival Distribution and in the United States by Big Daddy Music Distribution, based in New Jersey.

I am unfamiliar with all but two of the artists on this (I first heard Bruce Cockburn on the Franklin TV show). Any opinions out there on how this tribute will be? I heard Ron Sexsmith on the Country Awards and was not impressed with his rendition of IYCRMM.

Generally, I am (personally speaking) never too impressed with "tribute" albums. I'd sooner dig out the artist's originals and hear them again. This tribute CD, however, may be just the impetus it takes to bring about the timely release of Gord's new studio CD. So, in that regard, we can keep the faith and...perhaps, buying up this tribute in some numbers would help secure a quicker release of what we REALLY want to have on CD!

I'll definitely pick up a copy, though I'd have preferred a different selection of songs to cover (my personal Lightfoot favorites, of course). For any Beach Boys fans out there, I highly, highly (and even more highly) recommend CAROLINE NOW!, a stunning tribute album.

I agree that tribute albums are usually nothing to get super-excited about. Look at "Two Rooms" the tribute album to Elton John and Bernie Taupin. A few intersesting interpretations, best of all Wilson/Phillips version of "Daniel". Worst,Rod Stewart doing,"Your Song". There should be a law passed that people with raspy voices not do ballads. How about,"Common Thread",the country music tribute to the Eagles? It was cool at first but after awhile I went back to the originals. The unfortunate fate of these compilations,is that once you're bored of them, you take them to the 1st used music store that'll take pity on this CD,Tape or LP. I still have the Eagles one, mainly because I paid for it,so I may as well keep it. (Besides,I know no one will take it,they're overstocked with it already! Later!

The Canadian press has just (8/19) caught up with the rest of us in announcing the arrival of the "Beautiful" tribute album. They're still not on to the fact that Gord's next album is completed, though, mentioning that "the 64-year-old singer is said to be working on a new album...."

Actually the best song off of the "Two Rooms" CD was "Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me" by Oleta Adams.

Speaking of Mr. Ron Sexsmith,I was in Best Buy yesterday and was scoping out the CD's when right before my eyes was a CD of his. It's titled,"Cobblestone Runway". That's the 1st time I've heard someone use the term cobblestone since,"The 59th Street Bridge Song!" Amazing that I can recall the title after only looking at it once. I think that may be because I'm thinking of buying it. A young man who likes Gord has got to sound good (at least I hope so.) Just thought I'd mention it,in case any of you were looking for it. Later!

DMD3! On the thread about that CD,I gave a very good description of it. Classic Masters is not just the name applied to Gord's CD,it's a product name attatched to all artists they decide to do this format with. The cover is grayish and has a picture of gord from the late '60s on it. You can;t miss it! Check Tower Records or Sam Goodys! It's simply a collection of a few of his 60s songs. A CD true Gord listners should not miss.

Yes,Watchman! Go to Val's Gordon Lightfoot site and on the home page, click on the new line that mentions the CD. Personally,I think it's a really cool and different picture of Gordon. It reminds me of how much a hippie Neil Diamond looked like on the cover of,"Hot August Night." Meaning,if it didn't have their names on the cover, you'd never know it was them. I'm guessing it's the Canadian cover, which sometimes means here in the U.S. that we may get an alternate picture. I hope not. It's been me,later!

The photo, potentially, is adequate. I guess what I hate is that atrocious font selected for the title lettering! Couldn't it at least be, if not beautiful, then a little less homely?
