I've always loved this song, and been almost awed by it. It is beyond lyrics, it is truly poetry.

I agree that it is a call to examine our lives, our values, what we are leaving our children, to see where we really are. The prophetic tone, the "new wave that is breaking in the wake of a passing ship" is the wake up call, and yes, I always think of Dylan, and "the times they are a changing."

My absolutely favorite image, or turn of phrase, though, is "And we saw how leaves had fallen on the beds where trees are born."
