To DMD3,
I know where you're coming from. I'm convinced there's story in the songs from Pet Sounds, in the order they are listed on the album. Boy meets girl, boy leaves girl for big city, boy is depressed and misses girl and pet, boy meets another girl, girl dumps boy, boy warns friend about getting involved with dumping girl, boy is forced to 'sell out' to make some money, boy reassesses life, boy returns home and finds that the girl he once knew is bitter and has short hair. But at the time I realized this, it's what I was going through, so obviously my experience coloured my perception. I think it's an interesting idea, but I also agree that those songs can be taken in many directions. For me, Saturday Clothes, IYCRMM and Shadows tells a short story, one which was painful for me to experience. Lightfoot is a guy who has come through the dark tunnel and into the brilliant light of love and life and there is a lot of wisdom in his words, to paraphrase one of the earlier replies in this thread. I think it would make a great movie, although very depressing, and any movie with a dozen or so Gord songs would have my $9.00! If anybody wants to see a depressing movie that's a little similar to the one DMD3 proposed, check out Werner Herzog's Stroyzcek. Guaranteed to make you think life and humanity suck! Cheers!
