Going further with the Cat Stevens issue, it really shows how the media can distort things or leave incorrect impressions in the public's mind.
A reporter stated that Cat Stevens said he supported having Salman Rushdie executed for writing his book. Stevens later came out and said that he was taken out of context and made a point of stating he did not support this execution edict from the Ayotollah Khommeni. However I think most people still believe he supported the execution order and the media of course made no real effort to correct this perception
I know that from being on the inside of stories (from the course of my work) that you can only believe about half of what you hear and read in the media, they tend to get things about half right on average
