I thought maybe the ice water mansion referred to its (her, if you will) greatness in size and coldness. Superior meant upper, above, in relation to the other lakes (but you knew that I'm sure). And sailors often refer to their boats and the ocean as women. SomewhereupinMichigan is right too, a little poetic license and wonderful imagery, I kept picturing a woman singing inside an ice castle or above the lake. Maybe in a windstorm the lake really does sing!
