He's never been one to slur his lyrics or run words one into another that I can recall - even some reviewers have picked up on his distinct enunciation. He uses it to good effect in, say, The No Hotel, where he says "there's caterers who cater not / And waiters who don't wait a lot...," for example. It may be due to a gradual change in lung function (pre-aneurysm) or just a maturing of style.
