Some big names in the music industry are being tossed around this week for a flood relief concert in Peterborough.

Headed by Ronnie Hawkins and city councillor Terry Guiel, the concert is expected to attract some big names, however no groups have confirmed.

Rumours are circulating that The Tragically Hip could make an appearance and Mr. Hawkins is planning to call in a favour from his old buddy Gordon Lightfoot.

"Just his presence would be inspiring," says Mr. Hawkins, from his Stoney Lake home.

He says he's also been in contact with Jeff Healey and other high-profile musicians for the show, which may span more than one night. Mr. Hawkins says if things are organized properly, the concerts could last a month.

After seeing the devastation left after Thursday's flood, Mr. Hawkins decided to do what he does best - entertain. But this time he'll play for Peterborough residents, namely those not covered by insurance.

"I've got to do this, I don't want to play, but I owe people. You've got to do what you've got to do," said Mr. Hawkins, adding he's going to start practicing to keep up with the musicians he plans to bring to town.

But he has some good help in his corner. Coun. Guiel, also a local musician, has organized many charity shows and is looking forward to putting this together, even though he admits it will be a tremendous amount of work.

He says the event has already garnered attention from many in the music business as well as others.
"I got a call from the agent of the magician David Blaine," says Coun. Guiel.

He adds he's currently planning for a one-day concert, but says that could easily branch out.
No date has been set, but Mr. Guiel expects the show to take place on the Aug. 6 weekend at the Memorial Centre. The City still has to grant approval and confirm the date.

"The momentum is now," says Mr. Hawkins.

"The City is getting together to get a date and I'll start the machine rolling. If the City zeros in on one day, it won't work. I'm just getting ready to play everywhere they will let me."

Proceeds from the event will be put into a bank account to help citizens affected by the flood. Coun. Guiel says he personally will look after the money to make sure it goes to those in need the most.

"And I'll make damn sure it doesn't go anywhere until we get word from the Province if they will match it," he adds.

But there's not much time. Coun. Guiel says there are families in Peterborough with no clothes or washing machines to get their clothes clean.

Mr. Hawkins says he isn't reaching too high, expecting to raise $1 million for local residents.

"If I do get $1 million the mayor (Sylvia Sutherland) has to go to Niagara Falls with me for the weekend," he jokes.
