Lightfoot received the CCMA Hall of Fame award Monday night in Clagary, Alberta.
Gord was at the awards in Calgary with Rick Haynes. He had on his red velvet jacket with the shawl collar and an open necked black shirt. Black dress pants and black dress boots. Looked good!!! Anne Murray sang Cotton Jenney, Ron Sexsmith sanf IYCRMM and Ian Tyson did Early Morning Rain. There were old photos being shown behind them and when Ian said Gord's name he looked at Rick and said "sheould I go up now?" Rick nodded and said "Yes - go up." Gord walked up very hesitantly and climbed the few stairs. He went to shake Tyson's hand but then turned and gave Anne Murray a big hug first. The audience was on it's feet and Gord began speaking before they sat down. He said he was happy to be there and to be a Canadian. He thanked Ian, Anne and Ron for being there and he said he's been touring and writing and planning on doing that for quite some time. He thanked the association for the honour of naming him to the hall of fame and once again said he was proud to be a Canadian. He also said it was hard to categorize singer/songwriters. I guess because he's really not a country artist. The funniest part of the whole thing was when Ian was introducing Gord he said the CCMA is proud to welcome the luckiest guy from Orillia Ontario, Gordon Lightfoot. For those of you who have seen the famous speech from the Juno Hall of Fame show that Gord made you'd kill yourself laughing. Every other line was Gord saying "I'm the luckiest guy from Orillia". I thought it was hilarious and I think that's what threw Gord off in not knowing when to go on stage. He kept this speech short and sweet - I wish he had performed though.
