This is difficult. It's like trying to name the best songs, least favorite songs, best folk artists, etc. Even though I've been listening to Lightfoot since the 60's, when he became my favorite artist, I went though the lyrics of songs on this site, all of which I am most familiar with, and compiled three pages of "lines", far to many to present. Here are a few:
How long, said she, can a moment like this / Belong to someone / What's wrong, what is right, when to live or to die / We must almost be born / So if you should ask me what secrets I hide / I'm only your lover, don't make me decide
She touched his grizzled fingers / And she called him by his name / And then he heard the joyful sound / Of children at their games
In an old house on a hillside / In some forgotten town / Where the river runs down / From the forest
And it shines on and on 'til all sadness is gone / And if children had wings I would sing them this song / With a smile on my face and a tear in my eye / Everything will be fine by and by
If you think you need someone who needs you, you know I will always be there / I'll do it although I'm not supposed to care
We were children, you and me / Let us pray for the ones they call / The children of today
Roses are waiting for dewdrops to fall / Climbing your windows and walls / Bells in steeple are ringing, singing / Listen to them talk about your love's return
The patriot's dream still lives on today
It makes mothers weep and it makes lovers pray / Let's drink to the men who got caught by the chill / Of the patriotic fever and the cold steel that kills
I'm just a name, that's all / Scratched upon your wall / You've used it well, but what the hell / That's what walls are for
