I "revere" ALL the verses. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I don't know the answer. I seem to recall years ago he said something like "it's about a German girl I knew at the Playboy Club in New York City." He kind of laughed too.

And it seems like people (on here I think) once discussed the meaning of "treasures of paper and tin" in the song. It's certainly enigmatic, at least to me. And a lovely love song with a bit of sadness too.
