Unfortunately, the movie does give the impression, at the end, that much of the Canadian involvement, and the credit that was given, was a ruse to protect the "real" heroes. I have read that when the movie was first shown, the on-screen credits at the conclusion basically said that the Canadian involvement was minimal and they erroneously received much of the credit. There was justifiable outrage at that, and the version I saw said something about how the operation showed how the American and Canadian governments worked together to achieve a successful resolution to the crisis.
You're right, Char, it's a scary proposition to think that people are getting all of their knowledge of history from movies. The other Oscar-nominated movie I saw, Lincoln, also took some liberties, though nothing as egregious as Argo. And sadly, President and Mrs Lincoln still chose to take in a play.
