Re: Gord on the BBC Again
Rolf Harris is another Aussie. Despite living in England for several decades now, his accent is still pure Australian. He plays didgeridoo and was the first to use a wobble board as a musical instrument. Two of his best-known songs are "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" and "Six White Boomers".
He sang "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" on a BBC radio programme with The Beatles doing backing vocals. He adapted the lyrics as follows:
Cut yer hair once a year, boys
Cut yer hair once a year
If it covers your ears you can't hear, boys
So cut yer hair once a year.
Don't ill-treat me pet dingo, Ringo
Don't ill-treat me pet dingo
He can't understand your lingo, Ringo
So don't ill-treat me pet dingo
George's guitar's on the blink, I think
George's guitar's on the blink
It shouldn't go plinkety-plink, no
George's guitar's on the blink
Prop me up by the wall, Paul
Prop me up by the wall
'Cause if you don't I might fall, Paul
So prop me up by the wall
Keep the hits coming on, John
Keep the hits coming on
Till long long after I've gone, John
Just keep the hits coming on.
"Six White Boomers" is a Christmas carol about a joey (baby kangaroo) trying to find his mother in the heat of an Australian Christmas. Santa's sleigh uses six boomers (male kangaroos), rather than winter-loving reindeers, and they help him find his mother.
