I think part of what I like are the contradictions ("partly truth, partly fiction"). Rugged exterior, hard drinking, womanizing. Songs are perceptive, poetic, tender, humorous. With all the junk music around at the time, Gordon is putting out songs like "Christian Island" - not exactly the top 40 tune of the day and sooo much better, art. So is public image who they really are?

i agree with this completely. well said. It was hard to "see" the drinking and womanizing when the songs touched the heart. We could see the tender man beneath all the public man and that guy was/is attractive. (upon re-reading, my post sounds odd.... so sorry.)
