From reports I heard, Van Morrison would have been happy for Gord (or anyone else) to replace him in the Last Waltz concert. Van kept getting cold feet and disappearing from the venue. He returned just before his scheduled performance time, wearing a badly fitting jacket, got cold feet again and literally had to be booted onto the stage. (The boot appears in the film.) Despite all that, he delivered stunning rocky versions of "Caravan" and "Tura Lura Lura", backed by The Band. In 1985 he toured Australia for the only time, but was nowhere near as good on stage, seemingly just delivering the minimum performance acceptable under the contract.
