I just read in today's news update that the boy was also sexually assaulted - I realize 'child horrors' like this goes on all over the world but this case had me thinking more so than usual about a few things:
fate - in just an hour, a joyful, summer, early evening scene of boys playing together on their bikes could suddenly change to such an extreme all for the act of one (I am assuming mentally ill) human - how can anyone possibly protect our innocent youths - it reminds me of the Mystic River film/story to a point, also of the Holly Jones real life story (where she was snatched right out of thin air without anyone noticing)
ripple - how the event will affect not only the child but the impact will be felt (already evident) by his fellow biking friends, mother, brother and other eye witnesses who will live with the images ...the one lady stated it best when she said how the image of the boy struggling and screaming as he was shoved into the trunk will stay with her the rest of her life ...I have a friend who 30 years later is still affected by a far more subtle but similar scene but with a more deadly ending for the child
action - the public, often so very passive an turning blind eyes, in this case were heroic in their quick response - I think this is the feel good part of this story, that and the requirement to have the inner trunk release mechanism on all new vehicles, on this continent anyway
rage - I'm over the initial rage I felt when reading about this and now wonder what other acts this 50 year old guy has committed during his adult life - I also might feel pity, perhaps this man was violated as a child and his recent evil action is a ripple from his distant youth
prevention - this is the thought that has me helplessly drawing a blank
