Often you can know the song from his verbal intro, from the guitar he picks up (especially later in the show when you are down to just a few), from his shifting the capo on the 6 string (that means ODR or COTS), or from the first few chords (or sounds, as in Restless). Since you play guitar yourself, you'll probably find that you have written down the song before most of the audience knows what it is (ever notice the recognition applause by a handful of people upon the first few chords, and then the whole audience applauds when he starts the vocals and they all get it).

Taking down the set list is actually a lot of fun!
wow, I can relate to almost every word of your post with the exception of the last line, lol

I got a good chuckle over your keeping finger in place comment! ...I wonder if folks are doing similar documenting of concert details these days using blackberrys or texting, agh
