DID YOU KNOW this is one of the very few songs written by Lightfoot about A REAL person? Yeah sure he talks about the "cook" in the Wreck but he doesnt give them an actual name. ALSO did you know this the 2ND time Lightfoot recorded a song titled "Lesson In Love"? YES! HE wrote two songs with the same title. The other was the on the TWO TONES Live at the Village Corner album. I think Gord wrote both if Im not mistaken. If so it would be the ONLY SONG Gord wrote on the Two Tone Recording.
Well Norman you are quite correct you are mistaken!!
The Lessons In Love performed by the Two Tones in 1962 was actually
a cover of a song on the soundtrack of the 1961 (Sir) Cliff Richard UK film "The Young Ones"
Also Known As (AKA)

Años jóvenes, Los Spain
Alla är vi unga Sweden
Hallo, Mr. Twen! West Germany
Jeunes, Les France
Nuoret hurjat Finland
Wonderful to Be Young! USA

and was written by
Sy Soloman and Shirley Wolfe apparently

I had always presumed that when Gord was in the UK at about the time the film would have been on general release that he saw the film liked the song and got his partner Terry to sing it with him

picture for BillW
in their then current Everly Brothers style
but that can't be correct either as it was not until 1963 that Gord was in Europe when he married Brita and hosted 8 one-hour summer replacement shows in England for the BBC called "Country And Western."
so I guess he saw The Young Ones In Toronto
