Dedicated hikers love N.B. trails
FREDERICTON (CP) - Dedicated hikers Marianne and H.A. Eiselt have trekked in such far-flung places as the Himalayas, the Grand Canyon and Alaska, but the trails in their home province of New Brunswick still hold great appeal.
The Eiselts, who are both instructors at the University of New Brunswick, recently released the third edition of their book "Hiking Trails of New Brunswick" (Goose Lane Editions), which profiles 116 trails.
Asked to name her favourite, Marianne Eiselt cites two trails: Sussex Bluff, a one-hour hike in the southern part of the province, about halfway between Saint John and Moncton, with spectacular cliff-top views of Dutch Valley; and the three-day Lighthouse Trail on Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy, with the possibility of whale sightings.
The 40-kilometre Fundy Footpath is among her husband's favourites.
The pair recommend taking a topographical map and a compass on anything but the shortest hikes. A cellphone can provide a misplaced sense of security, since most backcountry areas are not covered," they write.
