Ah, Watkins Glen. It's about an hour south of where I live, depending on route.
My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon nearby and every year we go back to the glen to hike the trails. Not so sure about this year, though. They've discontinued the shuttle bus service to the top of the glen; we used to hike to the top, then bus down again. Now we'll have to hoof it both ways (puff, puff.) Most of it's not bad on the way up -- until you reach Jacob's Ladder, where the ascent *feels* damn near vertical and I don't bring hiking boots and crampons. And of course there's always some little old lady who zips past me and makes me feel about 100.
We continue on to Corning, just south of WG, to shop along Market Street and have lunch at Murphy's near the Corning Glass Museum. And then we come home along the wine trail between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Makes for a nice day trip.
