I initially thought Gordon would be Captain Quint, no question. When I posed the question to my wife she answered "Hooper" without hesitation. After watching it again, I think I agree. Gordon would definitely not be Chief Brody...he was afraid of the ocean and was the big-time family man. Gordon says in Songbook of his 1st marriage: "I didn't act the role of the doting, guitar-toting, singing father figure." Quint was too much of a loner to be like Gordon, as you can tell from his songs Gord's a "people-person" someone who cares deeply about relationships.
Matt Hooper was the smart oceanographer who was more interested in learning about the Great White instead of killing it. He had lots of class(i.e. The scene at Brody's house where he wanted to let the wine "breath"...like the elegant Gord pictured on "East of Midnight")lots of money(i.e. Hooper's expensive Hi-Tech boat...Gord was a millionaire in 1970 from his Warner contract!)plus he's got the beard!

The oceans of the world were the home of Big Blue/He was the greatest monster that the world ever knew...His mouth was as large as a tunnel so they say/His hide was thick as leather and his eyes quick and small/And his back was all scarred by the times he got away...
