'Britain'once meant the whole of the UK: England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, but today the Scots and Welsh crave independence so I am not sure myself what Britain means! But I live in England, I am very sure of that.

And no, it was not 'a stupid American question'. As you can see, even I am not sure of the difference.
