Without directly answering the original question (too hard to decide, and it changes according to mood, season, degree of sobriety and perhaps the phase of the moon; sometimes a song will come into my head that I hadn't thought of, and that'll set off a period when I'll listen over and over to songs of the same period), I'm glad you mentioned the strings. Perhaps it's just my prejudice (my wife is a violinist), but the synthed string parts of the later years just do not offer the same sound as the real thing in the early 70s. I'm well-aware of the added expense (I'm not suggesting he should take the London Symphony on tour with him), but in-studio it would be nice if he included some authentic strings.
