Two Gord songs on an Aussie's funeral album
 

(I'm posting this in General Discussion, but I don't mind if it gets moved to Small Talk.)

Following our ignorant panic trying to choose appropriate music for Dad's funeral last year, my sister made a home-recording for her far-future funeral and then I did the same for mine. I called it "The Dave B Soundtrack - Funeral tracks and 15 other classics". It has no commercial value; I just made copies to give to family and friends. It consists of 4 funeral tracks (including "Carefree Highway") and 15 album fillers (including "End Of All Time").

You've done the soundtrack of your life! And everyone you gave copies to will have a way to remember you once the time comes.

When my Mom passed away and the vocalist from church called to ask me if I'd like to include any specific songs, I couldn't think of many. I was reeling from the finality of it. I've since thought of songs that I should have included like A Mother's Love's a Blessing for my Irish born Mom. At least your loved ones will know.

You mention ‘the soundtrack of your life’ and mine could be filled 100% with GL songs.
I’ve found a Lightfoot track for most of the significant situations in my long life.

From meeting the girl who became my wife and a difficult courtship, to the tragic death of my son, Gord’s words have upheld me.
There are other singer/songwriters whose music moves me, but not as consistently as Gordon Lightfoot.

that it was a poor attempt may well be true, but although it was a super idea Dave I have to dare to make one trifling yet constructive criticism.
It is no earthly use posting the location of a pdf file if it is still only on your computer in your user's personal desktop folder. If you are using a Mac that I believe insists on making pdfs out of ordinary photos you'll be better off uploading the actual photo somewhere then displaying it using its internet URL and the "insert image" facility on the toolbar or attaching it (same difference)or providing the pdf is under 2MB attaching it to your posting in its own right. Just Sayin'!

I'm grateful for the feedback from FormerlyLavender, Martyn Miles and JohnFowles. As I PM'd to JohnFowles, I appreciated his IT suggestion, but I have no interest in becoming that IT-savvy and I decided not to post my funeral album cover on Corfid. Yes, after the four funeral tracks, the 15 album fillers turned out to be a "soundtrack of my life". I wanted to create a recording that would eventually be cherished by my twin daughters and any descendants they may have. I'm only doing it once. It's a representative sample of the music I've enjoyed from the 1970s to 2017. Ironically, it ended up with only two Australian artists (Shane Howard and Broderick Smith) and only one track sung by a female. If anyone wants to hear the (17 out of 19) tracks available on YouTube, they are as follows.

Wonderful Dave one of your chosen YouTube videos although a strange but interesting version is also very definitely on my personal life's soundtrack.In my final year at Imperial College London Uuniversity I shared a flat (apartment) near to Kew Gardens in London with three other students two of whom were on the same 5 year training course at Rolls Royce Derby. We started the year with very different musical tastes and therefore record collections but only the one old Dansette autochanger record player .However by the end of the year I think we all had grown to like all of the music we had been playing.
Oone of the others, Neil, had what has become my very favourite piece of classical music Rodrigo's superb "Concerto de Orange Juice " as the Grimethorpe Colliery Band conductor called it. But Neil's recording was by the very first Spanish guitarist who ever recorded the concerto one Narciso Yepes he even decided that his basic standard 6 string guitar was not good enough and invented a magnificent 10 string version and here is a wonderful YouTube video of him playing it. Eat your heart out Carter!!!But I did enjoy the Colliery band version especially the young trumpet soloist.
there is also a splendid jazz version by Miles Davis that is worth a listen and there are several audio only videos on YouYube

I enjoyed your last two replies, including the videos of the amazing 10-string Spanish guitarist and Ireland's Mary Black. I'm glad you enjoyed the Brassed Off movie version of "En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor", which had the late Pete Postlethwaite conducting Tara Fitzgerald's just-arrived flugelhorn player. (The flugelhorn you hear in it was by a male member of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band which recorded the movie soundtrack.)

Towards the end of the article, she wrote: "I’ve helped one of my brothers make his Funeral Tracks and 15 Other Classics. He is not expecting to need it any time soon, but if I had to listen to one more Gordon Lightfoot song, he just might have." She must have said it tongue-in-cheek to get a laugh. During my project, she only listened to two Lightfoot songs, and she's always loved his music!

I've just noticed the YouTube links I quoted re "Carefree Highway", "End Of All Time", "Whistlestar", "You Can Close Your Eyes" and "Mainstreet" are now inaccessible, quoting "The YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated due to multiple third-party notifications of copyright infringement."

Gee, did I cause that? Those five YouTube recordings were accessible for months and even years before I mentioned them on Corfid, but a few weeks later, all five were blocked. I have never understood YouTube laws (or wanted my use of YouTube to cause anyone problems), so I guess I need someone to explain it.

OMG, I just want to say that I just bothered to click on the offered YT link and was rather blown away by the performance. I'm a long time fan of Al Di Meola in every phase he performed, fusing rock with jazz, then after that rather mucked up his hearing, slightly more laid back but intense acoustic guitar. Occasionally since then, Al "plugs in" and does so wonderfully, but for the most part it's his own acoustic frantic skilled fretwork that provides his strings their energy. And the performance above rather reminds me on it - I have no idea who the chrome-dome guitar picker was, but man, he nailed it!
