Thought Gord's voice sounded reasonably strong. He had to run off stage for a few seconds after Beautiful. He used some kind of nasal decongestant tube at one point. He offered it to Carter, garnering an audience chuckle. With Rainy Day People, he talked of shortening songs and that unless you really know his song catalog, you probably won't miss them. With Spanish Moss, he talked about Tony Bennett and did an imatation of one of his standards. After the first verse, Gord told the audience- "Tony would have done this better." After the Spanish Moss instrumental, he seamlessly transitioned into "Beautiful." He had an extended intro to the Fitzgerald, but nothing really new that he hasn't already used before. The Second set started with the guys coming out and Gord saying this one, "Now and Then" was about unrequited love. Minstrel of the Dawn was one of the highlights for us. I had hoped for "Ring Them Bells." Would have been perfect for the Minnesota audience but he opted not to include it. With Baby Step Back, he talked about his ex-brother law and the golf course story. He said he gave up golfing pretty quickly. The funniest story of the night was he mentioned that he had met one of the Presidential candidates: Donald Trump, a number of years ago. Donald had sat there at the Trump Taj Mahal. After the concert, Donald came backstage. And Gordon said, "We were paid!" That drew a loud laugh. He mentioned that his wife Kim is from Mason City, Iowa. And that his first wife was a Swede. The second was Canadian. The third... "an American." When he said that he has been in the United States for about 55 years he got a hearty applause. He gave an extended chat about Elvis before "Early Morning Rain." That they had visited Graceland earlier in the year. Then a quick encore with Cold on the Shoulder and then the house lights come on. Look forward to the next concert- hopefully somewhere close in 2017. John- Minnesota |
Re: Minneapolis (10-16-16) Set List
Thanks for the setlist/review. Gord mentioned before that he follows US politics, so I'm not surprised about the Donald Trump story/reference;) Sounds like it was a great show.
