RICK: Rolling in to the Flynn Center in Burlington, VT, on the East shore of historic Lake Champlain. Hard to believe this is our 5th time in this Theater and our 7th time in Burlington! Saturday nite.

RIck:Last nite at the Flynn - I'd like to thank everybody for the compliments about our sound - It doesn't happen by accident! One of our 'unsung' heroes is Bob McFee, our sound man, the best sound man in the business. A lot of halls and theaters we go in to these days have pretty good / state of the art sound, but I like it best when Bobby can use his hand-picked gear that we haul around. Here, in the picture of last nite's set-up at the Flynn is how it turns out best - when we can 'fly' the system, rigged from points on the ceiling. That's PA 101.

I wanted to be at that concert so badly, but I just couldn't swing it... :(
My oldest child was born in Burlington, Vermont, and this concert was on my second child's birthday. It simply seemed like I was supposed to go! I hope it was a great show! |

The setlist at Burlington last Saturday was close to that of the earlier Greensburg PA concert on June 28 and was Sweet Guinevere Cotton Jenny Sea of Tranquility Drifters Don Quixote Clouds of Loneliness Wild Strawberries Spanish Moss Shadows Beautiful Here Gord said words to the effect that the next song, from APPT, was giving him problems with the lyrics, and that they were about his then fluctuating relationship (either up and down or on and off (I cannot remember his exact description) with "the mother of his fourth child" (that would be Eric's mother Cathy Coonley) (Eric evidently having been born a few years earlier than 1996 when APPT was recorded in Hamilton,ON at the Grant avenue Studio being released in May 1998(I bought my copy of the APPT CD on 25 June 98 from the HMV record store in Oxford Street London a day I had spent installing a flue in an office building near London Heathrow airport during which I phoned HMV to bag their one and only copy (Eric was 15 at the time of a Toronto Globe and Mail article dated 10 November 1997) So very much to my surprise and delight I was listening to Much To My Surprise The Watchman's Gone The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald Carefree Highway Intermission Now And Then Ribbon Of Darkness Sundown All The Lovely Ladies Never Too Close A Painter Passing Through I'd Rather Press On Ring Them Bells If You Could Read My Mind Restless Baby Step Back Canadian Railroad Trilogy Encore Rainy Day People The highlight and surprise for me was that inclusion of Much To My Surprise because I had not picked up (nor had anybody said anything about it) that this was previously on the June 28 setlist Later Rick said that it had either never been on a setlist or if it had not for a long time. Because I did not remember this song as being one of the "non-played" songs I firstly checked Jimmy's masterful analysis of songs not known to have ever been performed in public in the thread at:- http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=19529 or as I previously updated the list at:- http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showpost.php?p=180079&postcount=29 in which I said soooo, there we have it...the list of standard recording that have not been played live, to the best our collective knowledge?: updated list 25 july 2014:- 1.Slide on Over 2.The Soul is The Rock 3.Brave Mountaineers 4.Ordinary Man 5.A Passing Ship 6.Ecstasy Made Easy 7.You Just Gotta Be 8.Sometimes I Don't Mind 9.End Of All Time 10.Flyin' Blind 11,No Mistake About It 12,Sometimes I Wish 13.Cobwebs Dust 14.Poor Little Allison 15.Changes 16.Oh, Linda 17.Peaceful Waters 18.Pride of Man 19.Rich Man's Spiritual 20.The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face 21.Farewell to Annabel 22.Lazy Mornin' 23.Without You 24.She's Not The Same 25.Cabaret 26.Love & Maple Syrup 27.Redwood Hill 28.Same Old Loverman 29.Is There Anyone Home 30.Somewhere USA 31.Crossroads 32.Go Go Round 33.If You Got It 34.I'll Be Alright Next I Googled "Much to My Surprise lightfoot.ca set"+list and immediately found Wayne's 1996 tour summary on http://www.lightfoot.ca/1996sum.htm which categorically stated "Only one new song appeared on the spring leg of the tour, that being My Little Love, which made it into only one show. Two other unreleased songs, Much To My Surprise and Drifters made numerous appearences, with Much To My Surprise being dropped from the setlists about halfway through the tour. Only one show (Hagerstown, MD) had no unreleased songs played." In fact that page had opened by saying "The 1996 tour began on March 1 in Rosemont, IL" and when I read that a loud bell rang, because somebody (I think I know who) had some years ago very kindly made me a duplicate of the bootleg VHS tape that contains all but three songs of this concert but it does include Much to My Surprise Gord sang that song seated (a rare event). The video quality is somewhat iffy but I intend digging out my Pinnacle Video Transfer device http://www.hwp.ru/Multimedia/Pinnacl...transfer-1.jpg which I should be able to easily connect to the VHS player output with a standard red white and yellow triple wire then record as a digital mp4 file on a USB thumbdrive then upload it to YouTube as a live alternative to the studio recording by Char's greatly admired friend attaremad. When I have done that now that Char has revealed the secret for displaying YouTube videos here I'll be back. .. |
