Gordon Lightfoot, the singer-songwriter who helped define folk-pop music in the 1960s and ‘70s, will appear at the Historic Elsinore Theatre on March 14, director Steve Martin announced today.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, for the show, which is a new addition to the Elsinore calendar. It’s part of the Canadian musician’s cross-country “50 Years on the Carefree Highway” tour.

Lightfoot, 74, has been nominated for five Grammy awards and has sold multi-millions of albums.

His songs include “Early Morning Rain,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Carefree Highway,” “Sundown,” “(That’s What You Get) for Lovin Me,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” “Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” “Ribbon of Darkness,” and “Rainy Day People.” to name a few.

His songs have been recorded by a long list of performers, including Elvis Presley, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Judy Collins.

In late November, he was featured at halftime of the Canadian Football League’s Grey Cup. The crowd cheered him and booed teen heartthrob Justin Bieber.
