Melbourne Cup: Public holiday for a horse race

The other event that happens on the first Tuesday in November (EVERY year) is the Melbourne Cup two-mile horse race. It's a public holiday here and the race meeting is televised around the world. Past winners have included horses and jockeys from Ireland, France, Japan and New Zealand. This year, the attendance at Flemington Racecourse was 105,000 and guests included Prince Charles and Camilla. The winning horse was Green Moon. |
