Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
Well, that's one I've never heard before!
When I was 14 years old, I was madly in love with Herb Alpert. I even named my clarinet "Herb". And they called it puppy love... Cathy |
Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
He was a cutie..no doubt 'bout it.. That's an unfortunate choice of song to play on the trumpet tho.
A clarinet named Herb...what did it smell like?? ;0 |

and if i somehow do, i hope i have no nostrils on that note, maybe one day, Kenny G will have an "all GL" instrumental album however, i can wait |
Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
I only ask about smell because Cathy has a very aromatic guitar..One stand out memory from the 2001 Massey get together is Cathy asking me to smell her guitar. Being unfailingly polite and with so many folks watching I did so and was so happy that it actually smelled so good. I don't know what I would have said had it not.
lol Do clarinets have a distinct aroma? I don't know! ...bring it with you in May..We'll work it into the playlist of tunes somehow. |
Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
jj answered that for you. Nothing smells quite like a mouthpiece to a woodwind instrument. I'm sure Herb smelled much nicer.
Cathy |
Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
but why would anyone want to smell the mouthpiece? or is it something that can't be avoided?
we don't sniff guitar strings.just the wood it's made with... If testosterone had a smell then that's what I imagine Herb smelled like...unless you're referring to Herb the clarinet.. lol |

And then there's the "spit valve"...... |
Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
hey, playing trombone was my first dabbling with music, high school...i used to empty that horrid valve onto the 1st trombonist's shoe... mainly 'cos i envied him

Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
It's not like all musicians purposely smell their instruments. It's more like a haze that hangs over the instrument as soon as the case is opened.
It really can't be very healthy to place something that disgusting in one's mouth. I wonder if any research has been done on it. It'd be interesting to find out what kind of germs live in the mouthpiece of a musical instrument... or in the body of an instrument, as far as that goes. Cathy |
Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
umm,guys-I hate to sound like a know-it-all,but I was always taught that you're supposed to clean out(i.e-swab out) any instrument that has a mouth piece after EVERY use. That also means emptying the spit-valve.Reed instruments should have the reed removed from the mouthpiece and stored in their own separate
cases after EVERY USE.It doesn't hurt to swab the mouthpiece with alcohol every once in a while either. And of course, rinse the alcohol off before playing again. |
Re: Herb Alpert If you could read My Mind
Did all that. I think the only way to absolutely kill all the germs is to spray it down with Lysol, which wasn't even invented back then.

i think those who played reed instruments bought and brought their own reeds well, i just got the kid a baritone recorder..maybe i'll monitor it's aroma over time |
