Upon reading it again, I think you're right about it being a joke. I seriously doubt that Snoop Dog is the far right's favorite artist.

Unfortunately, it's become painfully obvious in the last 2 years that there are an awful lot of people who really think along these lines, plus they're angry, and they have found a voice, and that is a dangerous scenario.

Ya know I really hope you're right but as I peruse different websites/chats/blogs regarding some of these issues I'm afraid it probably isn't. There are a lot of people who think like that and they are pissed and some are very scary.....this one caught my attention more than others because of the Lightfoot mention.

I think it's tongue firmly in cheek - possibly poking fun at his own countrymen and their view of "The People's Republic of Canada", (as one idiot put it during the Obama presidential campaign). This could get real political, I suppose, with respect to the American psyche post-911, but from what I read on this forum, The Bard still manages to get American asses into American seats and play their favorite "toe tappers". I guess my sense of humour is virtually non-existant of late. That, and I'm getting so freakin' fed up with the political ads that are running on the telly that I've started using my "magic wand" more often & hit the mute button. I may have to look at the obnoxious little beggars, but I don't have to listen to them, thank goodness. As for the beanheads that keep on dragging Gordon into their nonsense, they need to have their collective heads examined. People like that apparently are nothing more than a bunch of little kids who are so bored it aint even funny. The pitiful part is that those are the sort of people that either are or else want to be in charge of the government at some level or other.

Yes it is an interesting site......At the end of the day though, we all realize the music is an international language, politics notwithstanding. But while it is true that right wing and left wing extreme views end up in music, Gordon Lightfoot has never really been about that.

I do seriously think that while there are a lot of skewed ideas coming from elsewhere in the world about what Canada is about, as well as all the world politics, and world conflicts, and all the global fears, somebody like Gordon Lightfoot comes along and gives us all a distraction from all that. We can think about "heaven can be yours - just for now", or "a summertime dream", or travelling on that "Carefree Highway". That's what it's about.

After having had a nice day at a birthday cookout for my brother-in-law, I finally got a wee bit of a sense of humour back. I think the person who wrote the piece is writing what is called a satirical piece, poking fun at some of these goobery extremists who go around running their mouths before they ever engage the gears. Me, right now at this point in my life I'd rather just, as some folks say, let sleeping dogs lie.
