Does anybody have the calendar or has seen one? They were illustrated and my guess, included passages and full verses.

I remember buying a Gordon Lightfoot calendar in the Cedarbrae Plaza in Toronto in the late 70's and if I recall it did have verses on some of the pages.

If memory serves me correctly the color was a sort of yellow but I no longer have it with me here in Vancouver.

It's quite possible it may still be in my son's place in Toronto and it may be also in the package of newspaper articles etc. I left with Sir John Fowles in May of 2005. Maybe John when you have a moment you could take a peek.

In the meantime I will email my son, Liam and ask him also to check.

I'm not too familiar with John McWilliams but Kahlil Gibran, I really enjoy his work.

Yes, the Schutz name does have a very certain ring to it. The Schulz's founded the wonderful greeting card/publishing company Blue Mountain Arts.

They published "I wish you good Spaces" the poetry of Gordon Lightfoot
and Blue Mountain arts has also published many calendars

Susan Polis Schutz (born Peekskill, NY, 1944) is an American poet and producer of greeting cards and the mother of U.S. Congressman Jared Polis of Colorado.

A longtime activist for women's rights and antiwar causes, she initially worked as a freelance writer. In 1971, she turned her hobby of writing poetry into a commercial venture by founding (with husband Stephen Schutz) the greeting card and poster company Blue Mountain Arts.

In addition to her poems published as greeting cards, Schutz is the author of several poetry anthologies, including "To My Daughter With Love on the Important Things in Life" (1986). Schutz's poetry focuses heavily on themes of love, family, motherhood, trust, and gratitude. Her poems' simple language and unrhymed free verse give them an approachable and sincere quality. However, their predictable idiom, consisting mainly of straightforward declarations of strong emotions, has led some readers to deride them as being kitschy and cloying.

Schutz and Blue Mountain Arts came to wider attention with the founding, in 1996, of the bluemountain.com web site. One of the earliest experiments with the electronic greeting card medium, the site was widely adopted by web users. In 1999, the dot-com venture Excite@Home bought bluemountain.com in a deal valued at $780 million.[1] The 1999 price paid for bluemountain.com became an example of what was later seen as the excesses of the dot-com boom: the website was sold again in 2001, to the firm American Greetings, for just $35 million in cash.[2]

Schutz is the executive producer and director of the documentary film Anyone and Everyone. The film features the coming-out stories of gay sons and daughters and their parents and premiered on KPBS public television in San Diego, California in August 2007 before being scheduled to air on a number of other public television stations in the United States. That would be nice and thanks! The color you mention/remember would be about right for keeping with the tone of the creater/publisher of the book. gee and even that you can recall buying it and when, I'm 'pressed ;)

I'm interested in this calendar in particular because I've never seen it for one thing. Found out there were other [photo] calendars -which I'm not so much interested in unless there are photos I've never seen before.

wow -thanks K for posting the Wiki entry, very fascinating. Especially the early .com boom example for bluemoon.com sold for $780 million down to $35 (cash though...not too shabby).

I will attach the image that appears in the current ebay auction for posterity. then go to try to find the valuable box that Ron entrusted to me, to see if the callendar is in it.
I rather doubt it as the box is much smaller than your average callendar
I confirm that I fully intend creating a "Ron's treasure trove" page of scans on my website one day to try to do justice to Ron's fabulous collection of artifacts. It is certainly in my list of deferred projects that keep getting put back by the urgent need to write tutorials for punters like young Peterborough who have trouble with their eyesight!!

OK you have made your point
You were correct Ron the 1978 calendar is quite small a bit larger than US letter size.
The general layout is not surprisingly similar to the other Blue Mountain Arts publication
"I Wish You Good Spaces" but the graphics that accompany each "poetry" quote are different.
I will try to scan each page shortly
There are many penciled in notes on the Calendar days which I will scan for you Ron.
These include on October 30th "Dentist"
So obviously in 1978 you still had some teeth left!!
On top of the pile was the attached photo inscribed "Wall Lightfoot"
I seem to vaguely recall Ron telling me who this Mr Wall was, perhaps he will elucidate
Once he has his teeth back in of course!

Ah, the joys of being a Lighthead.

I can't believe that I used that beautiful calendar as a regular one for dental appointments etc.

But now this is interesting. That dentist is the only one I have. I live in Vancouver but don't have a dentist here because I travel to Toronto enough to keep him as my regular dentist and he's a great guy and plays guitar as well so we have some strong bonds. (particularly pearly white ones). Just wish I still had all the hair I had in those days!

As regards to Mr. Wall here in the photo; his name is Michael T Wall and he also came to Toronto from Newfoundland in the sixties, except earlier that I did and played mainly country bars and wrote quite a few songs as well. He is a very big Gordon Lightfoot fan and would approach any entertainer and strike up a chat on the spur of the moment. He's showed me photos of himself with Johnny Cash and a huge number of others.

And thanks to KHester for that most interesting piece on Susan Schutz.

Thanks also to John for hanging onto that box of stuff and we look forward and appreciate all you can put out for us to see.

It no doubt will trigger some warm memories for this Sagittarian guy.

Light is very degrading to paper...especially on a scanner -always best to photograph in daylight (no flash) when/if possible.

Ron..I think it's great that you held on to the calendar. Probably, many people wrote on theirs then tossed them at the end of '78 (along with their disco records and elevator shoes :p).

And depending on how many were published -I would still think that it's relatively rare.

I'm enjoying this thread immensely - especially the part about Blue Mountain. I remember thinking how cool it was these many years ago to send e-cards (now it happens all the time, a boon to me who frequently has to send belated paper cards).

I don't have the 1978 calendar, but I do have the 1979 calendar. I must have bought it in San Jose, just before I moved to Portland. Not a mark on it, luckily! I also have the "I Wish You Good Spaces", a gift from a dear friend in California.

Both very beautiful pieces of work.

Hey John.

Thanks for doing this. It sure is the one alright and it brought back some fond memories for me.

On "02 back. jpg" I recognize a child's drawing of what might be a blue whale. I remember buying a book on the blue whale which contained some cool pictures which I gave to my son, Liam. The book eventually was taken back stage after Gordon Lightfoot concert in Massey Hall and autographed by Gord. I hope Liam still has the book with him in Toronto.

If he did that drawing he would have been I estimate between three and four years old.
I'll try and find out more information from him.

But I cannot believe that I actually used that beautiful calendar to keep track of dental appointments and the like. A total act of desecration to say the least!

NICE! That's a wonderful calendar, a treasure and your lucky to own it Ron!! It was meant to be used -written on and I love that Liam drew the whale! And if you hadn't have written in that dentist appt...you might have forgotten to go. If there was nothing at all on the calendar...eh just wouldn't be the same!

I still laugh at the doodling my brother did on some of his Beatle's and Monkey's memorabilia. Mustaches and eyeglasses, etc. It's a great reminder of how zany and funny my brother was.
