When the Orillia Opera House was able to make available a few last-minute tickets for the sold-out Gordon Lightfoot concerts on the weekend, those who were fortunate enough to snatch them up felt "like they had won the lottery."

That was how Krista Storey described the elation of those people and the excitement of everyone else who filed into the Opera House Saturday for the first of two shows.

Really, though, the Opera House and the Soldiers' Memorial Hospital (SMH) Foundation felt like they, too, had won the lottery.

Lightfoot is splitting the proceeds from the shows between the two institutions, both dear to the Orillia-born folk musician.

"The band members said Gordon always gets excited about performing here. This is home," said Storey, general manager of the Opera House.

After his Saturday concert, Lightfoot met with officials from the Opera House and SMH. He signed and tuned a guitar that will be auctioned off on the website eBay, with the proceeds going to SMH.

"It's a very special moment. Gord is such a wonderful supporter of the hospital," said SMH president and CEO Elisabeth Riley. "He's a legend in his own time, and it's great to see him support his hometown."

And it was "a thrill," she added, to see Lightfoot — who turns 71 tomorrow — perform live.

"I enjoyed it from beginning to end," Riley said.

The Opera House and SMH weren't the only ones to benefit from the concerts. The Opera House donated two tickets to the recent Kiwanis Auction, and they fetched $130 each, which will go back into the community.

"We pay it forward," Storey said.

Another great pic, that long hair looks really good on him in this one. I wonder if he's still letting it grow, and must have it in a pony tail sometimes ? Cool Dude ! :cool:

The signature is upside down.

If you look at the picture on ebay of Gord tuning the guitar you will see that when he holds the guitar, to play or to tune, the signature is upside down. Only the guy playing it would see it right side up.

Now this does not mean I don't want the said guitar, and Char I believe you were going to arrange this. LOL

The picture of Gord onstage is the one from the e-edition of the Orillia paper.
The bidding as of 12:01 a.m. wed.nov.18 is $2600.00.

isn't that odd? anyhow, i guess it's looks nice when you open the guitar case...or if you're a lefty and move the pick guard

i also thought that was an odd place on the guitar to sign it...it's right where i (probably unconventionally) rest the outside edge of my hand and unless re-laminated, may get smeared

i should bid...it wouldn't hurt to have a bit of GL rub off on me

Great pics... looking in the soundhole & seeing that CF Martin logo, would make almost any guitar player feel good owning that guitar.

BIDS FOR LIGHTFOOT GUITAR TOP $5,000

With time running down, bidding on a guitar autographed by Gordon Lightfoot has reached US$5,300.

"It will be really interesting to see what happens in the last few hours," said Nicole McCahon, executive director of the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Lightfoot signed the brand new Martin D-18 guitar during his visit to Orillia earlier this month for two sold-out concerts.

It is being sold on eBay, an online auction site with the proceeds going to the hospital foundation.

Bidding closes at 7 p. m. on Nov. 26. Often there is flurry of bids in the last hours of an auction when the serious bidders weigh in, McCahon said.

"I'd like to see it closer to $10,000. That would be great."

Patti Scott is a death-defying Gordon Lightfoot fan.

At the 2007 Mariposa Folk Festival when a thunderstorm blasted Tudhope Park and sent hundreds of spectators racing for cover, Scott sat tight as Lightfoot plunged on through the driving rain.

"I sat in the lightning; my date didn't," said Scott, who was the highest bidder in the online auction for a D-18 Martin guitar autographed by Orillia's most famous son.

"I've always loved Gordon Lightfoot," said the owner of Orillia Pharmacy, strumming the acoustic guitar at a news conference yesterday afternoon.

"It's an amazing guitar. It has a nice soft touch -- a nice sound."

Scott, who paid $7,719.68 (US$7,400) for the honey-coloured instrument, said she went beyond the price she had set as a maximum.

"I felt strongly it should stay in Orillia," she told a small group gathered in the offices of the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital Foundation office on Mississaga Street West.

The fact the proceeds were going to support the foundation, which purchases equipment for the hospital, was also a motivating factor, Scott said.

"Somebody will receive treatment in the future from equipment that wouldn't be there otherwise," said Bob Middaugh, chair of the hospital's board of directors.

"They won't know who to thank, so we'll thank you now."

The hospital also extended thanks to the manufacturer Martin guitars, which donated the guitar with the assistance of Gilbert Guitars in Orillia.

` The first stringed instrument Scott learned to play was a ukulele in Grade 4. She later learned to play guitar at campfire singalongs and knows the chords to Lightfoot'sIf You Could Read My Mind.

"Every girl wants a guy to be able to read her mind," she quipped.

Scott was on holiday in Antigua in the Caribbean when the bidding on eBay came to a head Thursday evening.

"I was in a little Internet booth at the hotel."

Although this was her first time on eBay and there was a one-hour time difference, Scott managed to edge the competition, logging half a dozen bids in the last half hour. She placed her final bid seconds before bidding closed at 7 p. m.

A few seconds later, she received an email saying she had won.
