BEAUTIFUL / A Tribute To Gordon Lightfoot

To all you Lightheads {Corfidians} who happen to own this CD, what cover of these Lightfoot songs would be your very own favourite ! :)

My own personal fav / is "The Way I Feel", by the beautiful vocals of Margo Timmins, from Cowboy Junkie ! :)

I know Gord loves "Black Day In July", by: The Tragically Hips !

My favorite is Drifters - Ron Sexsmith. A close second is Summer Side of Life - Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

Jbt loves Maria Muldaur's version of That Same Old Obsession.

It's after I listened to "the way I feel" that I became a cowboy junkie fan. So the answer to the question is...The Way I Feel!

I vote for "Song for a Winter's Night" by Quartette.

I would also vote for Quartette's "Song for a Winter's Night". And my wife likes it better than Gord's original!

There are a lot of great covers on this CD. My favourite is Drifters, but Bruce Cockburn's haunting rendition of Ribbon of Darkness and Murray McLauchlan's Home from the Forest come close.

My favourite is absolutely Home From the Forest. It is the only Lightfoot cover where I would dare to suggest the cover version might be even better than the original.

In order, my top three favorites on this Tribute CD are:

Murray McLauchlan - Home From the Forest (sung with a lot of expression)

Maria Muldaur - That Same Old Obsession (although Maria's voice seems that of an aging smoker, she puts a lot of feeling to this song that connects to my heart)

Quartette - Song For a Winter's Night - some beautiful, delicate harmonies that are very appropriate for this tender love song.

tracks 1 and 15 are still in my iTunes rotation...i was pretty pumped after hearing that Junkies arrangement after cracking the CD wrapper...i slowly came down as the album progressed...however the production and mastering was slick throughout and there are some interesting arrangements here and there with only a few clunkers, imo

i was hoping to finally hear Jim Cuddy conquer a Gord tune (so many would work) but that didn't come to pass...however, GGR is certainly kinda fun

HFTF is tasty but there are 2 or 3 other versions I prefer

the Muldaur and Caldor cuts had me looking at my watch, I should give them another go...maybe i'm less shallow now

it was great to hear a studio cut of the very fine Finnan tribute track, I hadn't heard it since the inaugural Hugh's Room performance...it was hard to believe that it could ever be eclipsed

so in short (ok, that really wasn't), #1, final answer....cheers, jjo
