The blurb next to the photo of Lightfoot sitting on the stool states :

"these performances have become a time-honoured cultural event"

I find the label of "cultural event" a bit vague. I could speculate, but I'm always wrong when I do. So......what makes the performances a "cultural event" ? Are there other activities that coincide with a Lightfoot performance at Massey ?

Lightfoot IS Canadian music..he/it's a part of Canadian culture..so when he's once again at an iconic place like Massey that is a cultural centre itself for the events held there over the years it's a cultural event.
IMHO..
;)

Thanks. I understood what Lightfoot represents musically, but failed to grasp the significance of Massey Hall.

I'll buy it.

Thanks again.

[quote=RM;153705]...the significance of Massey Hall.

quote]

Gord made his first stage appearance as a fairly wee one at the Opera House in Orillia so that's also a sacred venue (as well as it being the site where he took ill) but his first appearance at Massey was back in 1952 when he performed at the Kiwanis Festival and it's then and there that his life changed. (full article with Gord quotes at Wayne's site)

15 years later (March 1967) he had his first solo performance on the same stage to two sold out crowds. So I don't know why they state it's the 40th anniversary of Massey gigs. I'm using all appendages (2x each) to check the math and am coming up with 42...anyhow, it's quite a pastoral setting

With all that said, I'm not sure exactly what the definition of that phrase is but I used it recently when describing "boarding the Toronto Island ferry" as a cultural event ...I'd also consider quaffing a bowl of $0.99 spaghetti from the CNE's Food Bldg a cultural event...maybe that's just a tradition, I'm not sure of the difference...also, I'm not sure if the spaghetti's still $0.99

btw, the 'text eliminated' b&w version of the bar stool portrait printed well...postcard-like...not sure who the photographer was

I'd think the spaghetti/Tiny Tom's doughnuts is a tradition at a cultural event..
lol
I calculate 42 years as well..

you nailed it....rm's right, everything does make sense now

ok, so what's a ritual? eg. it's a ritual to hop on the Zipper after quaffing the Primo's and those sugary Tiny Tom's...and "heads up below!"
