What Song Gives You Goosebumps?

I was driving home from work last night and listening to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Although I have heard it a thousand times and am proud to say I know all the words, it still gives me goosebumps. What an incredibly perfect song it is, unlike any I have ever heard. It is perhaps the song that will carry Gordon Lightfoot's legacy on forever and ever even after we are all gone.

As I drove along the lakeshore (near my home), and looked out at the gray and choppy water, I once again listened carefully to the lyrics. I tried to imagine how brave those men were on that freighter, and how frightened they must have been when they realized they were going down. I wondered what words were spoke to each other and what prayers were uttered in their last living moments.

I tried to imagine how those 29 men who died that November day on Lake Superior would feel if they knew that song was written in tribute to them. How incredibly comforting it must be to their families to have a song written that immortalizes their loved ones.

It all got me thinking, what other Lightfoot songs give you goosebumps, and why?

'Tatoo' and 'I'm Not Supposed To Care'('76 version).

Both about breakups and still being in love with the person - gutwrenching!

'Tatoo' is probably still my favorite GL song.

Goosebumps? "Fitzgerald". Makes the hair stand on the back of my head everytime I hear it. Got my attention in '76 too, let me tell you.

If Children Had Wings, Shadows, and Restless. But the Fitz gives me goosebumps most of all.

How about the other boat song "Ballad of the Yarmouth Castle" . Especially the verse
"Jump down, jump down!" the captain cries
"We'll save you if we can!"
Then the paint on his funnels is a-fryin'

I can feel the heat now. Goosebumps... no...blisters

For me I think it would have to be Seven Island Suite. It leaves me with the sensation of being or feeling like a great eagle that's flying high over the area & feeling so free.

Yeah, "Seven Island Suite" is a good one, too. To me, the imagery in "Seven" is the thing here, whereas with "Fitzgerald", it's the *sound* that creeps me out - probably the wailing of Peewee Charles' pedal steel. "Seven Island Suite" has a "misty" sort of early morning feel to it when I consider the imagery in the lyrics.

That's funny because when I read the thread title the first song that came to mind, just like Kelly, was 'Tattoo'. It's such a great song, and the lyrics perfectly fit the melody/mood of the music.

You know, if this keeps going, I'll have to change my mind on what song I chose that gives me goosebumps. "Tattoo" is a favorite of mine, and the best song on "Salute" - please no emails (lol). "Tattoo" is full of imagery, and sounds wistful and lonely to me. So let's see: there's "Fitzgerald", then "Seven Island Suite", and now "Tattoo" - now I can't make up my mind. They're all good examples, but that wailing on "The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald" really does creep me out.....*shiver*.....
