You choice for Top Gord song recording?

sorry, I had to start a new thread because I couldn't add a poll to the existing Top 3 thread which surveyed members last week

it was hard to choose a top 3, so now it will be even tougher to select 1 single recording as your fave...again, any Billboard charting songs were not included and this final list only includes songs that were selected by more than one member in their top 3...I've listed the others below in a very interesting consolidated list...one that would make a wonderful 2 CD corfidian compilation

Approaching Lavender
Cabaret
Christian Island
Dream Street Rose
East of Midnight
Go My Way
Highway Songs
I'm Not Supposed to Care
It's Worth Believin'
Miguel
Minstrel of the Dawn
Now and Then
Old Dan's Records
On The High Seas
Race Among the Ruins
Redwood Hill
Restless
River of Light
Salute
Seven Island Suite
Ten Degrees and Getting Colder
That Same Old Obsession
Too Late for Praying
You'll Still Be Needing Me
Your Love's Return

i stand by my pick...not great Canadian wilderness imagery here but rather, simple, well phrased lyrics that blend so nicely with a matter of fact melody and seamless chord progressions...most importantly, a wonderful vocal delivery, arrangement and recording...this is a song most anyone has worn on their sleeve as some point or other...so move on over, CRT, lol

...still I can't deny you go with me everywhere
when I'm dreamin' you still share my lonely nights

...at the end of my life I would pray that I could be
returning to the shelter of your love

...remember all the good times there's a ghost in every room

...another empty bottle and another tale to tell

oh dear - I have to think - Tattoo, Ordinary Man, Shadows, SDYS..
you don't have "restless" , "i'll tag along' ...
TOO hard to choose!

That's tough having two there that fight for the best song on the album they're on - Don Quixote and Ordinary Man.

Will take some thought.

I have trouble with All The Lovely Ladies. It has nothing to do with the song and everything to do wuth having Gord introduce it one night as All the Lovely Ladies in Refineries Tonight.....

My vote goes to SFAWN, second only to IYCRMM,. Both lyrically beautiful, with haunting melodies. But there are so many great ones...

It was hard bacause two of my favorites were on the poll. I went with "Tattoo". I love "All The Lovely Ladies" equally as well though.

hey Flo:)
I don't think your vote registered...better try again
The poll closes in a few days, the 15th...hope we have no late arrivals as seems to be the case in the Top 3 poll...there very well could be a class action boycott

Well,I voted for Song For A Winter's Night, because out of all those that one's the best in my view.

My other choices, not here of course, would be Seven Island Suite or End Of All Time. :)

are we supposed to vote and comment jj ? or just vote & wait ? I need some clarification here, thanks.

Bill :)

BillW, vote and wait (til the 15th)...comment is optional but I love reading any rationale for their pick (or flaming of other's choices:) )

...or you can just comment and not vote, like our char, lol

well, 20 voters so far is a decent sample...i read somewhere there are about 90 active members...hopefully a few or many more chime in...perhaps placing a 7 day voting window on the poll was unwise and discriminating to the folks who just drop by monthly...please send any and all complaints to the moderator:)

For me, "Did She Mention My Name?" Red Shea's guitar work on that song is nearly flawless, and almost impossible to duplicate.

sorry DSMMN wasn't nominated in the Top 3 list...I would agree that it's one of (perhaps THE) Gord's signature tunes/recordings...am surprised it's not on the Billboard list

Re: You choice for Top Gord song recording?

I voted again,jj. I don't know why the first one didn't take. So many good songs :)

Re: You choice for Top Gord song recording?

SO, it looks like the fave Gord recording is CRT (based on 25 odd voters)

seems like most folks like any CRT recording but I agree with fezo regarding Red's outstanding work in the former-most version

runners up are Shadows and SFAWN...both are fine choices, many years apart

I'll spare all yet another Poll but if we were to poll which of the Billboard charting songs (top 200) I would think we'd pretty much unanimously arrive at a top 3 of:

IYCRMM
Sundown
TWOTEF

so, I think if one were to introduce an alien to Gord music for say, a half hour you couldn't go wrong with combo of radio charting tracks as well as album cuts, ie. Sundown, IYCRMM, TWOTEF, CRT, Shadows, SFAWN

...and if those didn't turn their crank I suppose you could keep that one about the Yellow Canary in your back pocket

thanks for playing, all

ps) again, for those who missed the original thread, the Billboard #200 charting songs were:

Anything For Love
Beautiful
Sundown
Carefree Highway
Rainy Day People
The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
Race Among The Ruins
The Circle Is Small
Daylight Katy
If You Could Read My Mind
Talking In Your Sleep
Summer Side Of Life
