Cincinnati Concert 4/4/08
It was good to see my old friend in Cincinnati tonight performing at the Aronoff Center. It was a rainy night but Gordon tried his best to lift everyones spirit with a toe tapper here and there.
His voice was thin and strained throughout much of the show (especially the first 4 or 5 songs) as he played before what appeared to be a capacity crowd. I hope and pray he can get some rest (especially his voice) and come back strong in June. He was quite conversational during the show and even told a joke near the end of the gig. I hope someone was able to get an accurate set list but here is a close approximation to what he did: Cotton Jenny Carefree Highway Sea Of Tranquility 14 Karat Gold Never Too Close A Painter Passing Through In My Fashion Rainy Day People Shadows Beautiful The Watchman's Gone Ribbon Of Darkness Sundown The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald 20 minute intermission Triangle Hangdog Hotel Room Restless If Children Had Wings Waiting For You Make Way For The Lady If You Could Read My Mind My Little Love Early Morning Rain Blackberry Wine Encore Old Dan's Records The above is from my memory and so I'm quite sure I missed the order here and there. He did not do DQ or Baby Step Back. There were shouted requests for Daylight Katy and No Hotel but he did not do those either. All in all...he received a standing ovation for IYCRMM and the crowd seemed happy with his performance. |

Gordon Lightfoot @ the Aronoff Center (4/4/08) Apr 5, 2008 at 2:54 AM Post a comment I went down to Gordon Lightfoot's concert at the Aronoff Center on Friday night. I walked around a bit before the show and then went on in with just a minute or two to spare. I was barely settled in when a skinny little man close to 70 strutted out and started singing "Cotton Jenny". Gordon Lightfoot's voice is shaky, but when a singer has songs as good as his, it doesn't really matter that much. I'm willing to overlook some vocal issues to hear those songs. The first half of the show was heavy on the hits. Mr. Lightfoot and his band played "Carefree Highway", "Rainy Day People", "Beautiful", "Ribbon of Darkness", "Sundown", and a touching version of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" to end the set. After a 15 minute intermission, Gordon Lightfoot came on back out and started in on the second set. I wasn't familiar with as many of these songs, but I still enjoyed myself. The best part, of course, was getting to hear "Early Morning Rain". It's one of my all-time favorite songs. I've loved that song ever since I was 14 or 15 and found it on my parents' vinyl copy of Peter, Paul & Mary's Ten Years Together. Really, is there a better song out there? How many other songs have been covered by Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan? As always, here's the setlist: First set: Cotton Jenny/Carefree Highway/Sea of Tranquility/14 Karat Gold/Never Too Close/A Painter Passing Through/In My Fashion/Rainy Day People/Shadows/Beautiful/The Watchman's Gone/Ribbon of Darkness/Sundown/The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Second set: Triangle/Hangdog Hotel Room/Restless/If Children Had Wings/Waiting For You/Make Way For the Lady/If You Could Read My Mind/My Little Love/Early Morning Rain/Blackberry Wine Encore: Old Dan's Records Overall, it was a great show. In a perfect world, I would've traded in a couple of the songs I didn't know for "Did She Mention My Name" or "For Lovin' Me", but that's not a big deal. Those were the only personal favorites I didn't get to hear. |

Re: Cincinnati Concert 4/4/08
Gord had us all laughing with his intro to WFY which he described as having been written over Nebraska on the way home after a long road trip. "Of course you know what was on my mind . . . but it didn't pay off that night."
Tonight's riddle: Why is the moon pale? |
