Vintage portable recorder
1 Attachment(s)
Back in the 60s my dad had a cool small portable reel to reel tape recorder. It was gray, and had an attatched microphone with a squeeze button to activate recording. I can't remember what kind it was and can't locate it on the web. So I've included a sketch in case anyone out here has an idea.

Re: Vintage portable recorder
Hi Bill,
I also had one in the mid 60's, it was a Sears. Still have those reel tapes that I was recording with. I should get another machine and listen to those old tapes. Because I know I have some Lightfoot stuff on them. . Too bad you dont have the Company that manufactured it. Then maybe we could find a pic of one. You can find different ones for sale on ebay. |

Re: Vintage portable recorder
I'm guessing from what we had available in those days that it would have come from Sears, Mongomery Ward, JC Penny, or Radio Shack (although we didn't get one of those in town until the 70s).
It was small, maybe 10" wide and kind of wedge shaped. The unique feature was the retangular wedge shaped microphone with a squeeze button that could also slide up to lock on recording. It stored neatly in a compartment with a magnet latch flip up lid. |

JC Penny !
http://www.justradios.com/TapeRecorder.html http://www.roger-russell.com/magrevsr.htm Their has to be many hundreds different models that one can find, maybe thousands. We would need the name of that particular machine your father had. Then it would be a snap to find. :) ebay ! http://cgi.ebay.ca/STARLITE-STATESMA...QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.ca/AWESOME-BI-DIRECT...QQcmdZViewItem |

Re: Vintage portable recorder
Maybe John Fowles can you find a Reel to Reel tape recorder that would resemble this sketch ? Very difficult without the make/year of the machine.

Re: Vintage portable recorder
Too bad I can't identify that particular recorder but I remember having a Webcor reel to reel recorder that we bought in maybe 1962. We'd put the microphone up to the radio speaker to tape things off the radio. Lots of fun at the time.
I still have the box of tapes taht are no doubt unlistenable now. Guess I'll have to get an old reel to reel again and find out..... |
Re: Vintage portable recorder

Re: Vintage portable recorder
Hey! That's got to be a top of the line sort for $207 in those days! you can see the family resemblance though.
