and I'm waiting for short/clear instructions on how to save them to my computer with the audio AND video..

Katrinka offered up some great suggestions but alas I have failed miserably at following them..

I have the December radio interviews converted to MP3 and WAV (with help from DaveV) but they are HUGE and need to be made smaller..
HELP!!

Re: You Tube ~gl~ videos.

char, even if you learn how to pull the audio (and save me rebuying my old scratchy GL stuff) send it to me ... will be waiting for the condensed tutorial, til the cows come home:)

wonderful dedication, tj...my 2 cents would be to reconsider if I'll Be Alright for pace issues....imo, slo tempo tunes lend for drawn out transitions but the uptempo stuff might call for some rapidity (which means 10x the work) - but it's all art, no wrongs and so well intentioned

nice work on the rostrum stuff in the other tunes I've seen - move over Ken Burns! ;)

hope to continue our chat (interupted by a loud CRT rendition, lol) if paths cross in 08

if you have a channel of non GL work or have moved into video, i'd love to check it out
well, off to plow/shovel...imagine you're getting the same in the horseshoe and wittleby

Actually in order to avoid the spread of confusion
a couple of points are in order
  • If Tom had been announcing his own videos here
  • we would know that
  • Tom's tally is now 46 and I am preparing a links page to upload to my web site.
  • All of the recent 4 in this thead are by somebody else obviously a keen fan of Gord's early works and an obvious admirer of Tom's pionering efforts as in many ways he/she seems to be have been inspired what "our" Tom has created
the usurper's youtube name is actually "duinnerfs"
and the links to the 4 videos are:-
  1. Walls
  1. If You Got It
allegedly from the "From Way I Fell" album!!
  2. I'll Be Alright
  3. Rich Man's Spiritual
Please Note that in each of the 4 URLs I have deleted http://www.youtube.com/watch? from the front (to avoid the board's "parsing" of the URL and displaying the youtube video player then you cannot see the URL at all at all so just restore each one by adding the v= biyt tother deleted part

thx for that, jf
makes a bit more sense, those were not on par with bit of tj & co work that i've seen
no offense to the other fan, am sure his portfolio done with same admiration and intents

i've got a new Mac toy (i wont be using) which takes your video or pic inputs and auto dissolves them to rhythm of the music you select - my 3 year old is now able to create and post to youtube, crazy ...i am basically redundant, lol

wonder how RJ making out with the mac, love to see he and son's audio blended with video

youtube is the modern day candid camera - you could be on there and not even know it
atleast folks got paid on that old tv show...Socan needs to track youtube hits for royalties

Re: You Tube ~gl~ videos.

OK
one of the sites that have cited one of the imposter's videos
is
http://www.last.fm/music/Gordon+Ligh...+1-LIq5HY78-7E
Jimlad said something about a condensed tutiorial by which he is inferring I take it that my effort was too verbose. So be it, and I see that it failed to get CHar satisfactorily in business despite my best efforts ,
As an update I have found to my chagrin (no grin)that every program that I have tried to use to download youtube videos starts off OK but at some point or other gives up the struggle.
The most reliable and simplest method by far is to use Internet Exploder (if you have it) and because it is a simple and unarguable fact is that if you watch an entire video
(even on these pathetically retarded i.e. SLOW dial ups) you will eventually be invited to replay it and lo and behold it will then play straight through without any of the frustrating 2 second burst rubbish. this is because in point of fact (as is obvious if you stop to think aboot it) the complete video file is actually on your computer in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder that on my windows XP computer is at:-
C:\Documents and Settings\01-Master\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
and if you look in there the most recent and largest files will be shown at the bottom
probably like this
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/tutoria...d_renaming.jpghttp://www.johnfowles.org.uk/tutoria...d_renaming.jpghttp://www.johnfowles.org.uk/tutoria...d_renaming.jpghttp://johnfowles.org.uk/Tutorials/i...d_renaming.jpg
which you then copy and paste into a "saved videos" folder (say on you desktop) where you can rename them as you wish:-
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/tutoria...ed_as_flvs.jpg
thereare in fact several actual youtube video tutorials on this, and one specifically for Internet Exploder is at:-
and somewhere I found a webpage with the same information in text form which i dsaved for my tutorial but is mislaid and probably on one of a number of floppy disks lying around her!!
I only remains to ask a pair of very pertinent questions
  1. Why would you want to save them anyway?
  2. is it legal??
I found this summary on one site:-
Why would I want to save video from the Internet on my computer?
It is always a good idea to save web content that you like on your computer, as it may not always be available in the future. This includes flash videos. Below are some of the reasons why you may consider saving the video:
· So you can access it later at any time, even if you are not connected to the Internet.
· The video might be removed from the web in the future.
· The video might be edited, with the content you liked taken out.
· You may want to use the video material for purposes other than watching: such as using it in presentation.
· You would like to make the video accessible on your mobile phone, player, or PDA, in this case you need to save it as avi file.
· You may want to convert the video to another format.
· Many other reasons!
Or more simply as I see it so that you can then watch the video "on demand" .
BUT the original flv has to be either viewed in one of the free but to me poor looking flv viewers or converted to a different format that you can then play on the vastly more satisfactory Windoze Media Player, or if you are so bold and adventurous burnt to either a Video CD or a DVD to play through a standard television set, for which the video must be in MPEG-1 and -2 format respectively
the answer to 2 is more complex as the issue of copyright rears its head again as it does with all mp3 and copying activity of course.
Basically as I see it it could be argued that the crime is in uploading a copyrighted item not downloading it and as in the case of video tapes per se the argument is that as the courts agreed copying something that you own purely for ones own use is legal.
What is obviously a crime and very much against the artists' interests is to try to profit by selling illegal copies.
If you simply google for "download youtube videos"
you should get a staggering 7 million plus results
including an online download tool that refused to do anything for me at:-
http://www.techcrunch.com/get-youtube-movie/
search within those 7 million for "Is this legal"
reduces the total to just over one million including the above referenced techcrunch site again under the google banner
Huh? YouTube Sends TechCrunch A Cease & Desist
there you can read the interesting cease and desist attorney's correspondence with that website from 2006
http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/11/15...-cease-desist/
this was also reported on at:-WeatherID=571
http://www.chillingeffects.org/weather.cgi?
OK that is some food for thought and reading over the weekend
Discuss

ELP!!

Dear CHarlady
My most recent posting should solve your youtube saving problem , and it is extremely easy to convert either a full wav file or its equivalent mp3 which will typically be aboot 1/12 the size
Exactly how huge are the mp3and wav files you now have
the size of any audio file is directly proportional to the sampling rate , which for a full uncompressed CD format wav is 1411 Kilobits per second or KBPS or Kilobit per second the initiated where 8 bits =1 byte. so if you convert to an mp3 sampled at 141.1 KBPS it will be exactly 1/10the size of the original wav. However as I stated elsewhere it is a fact that speech only sound files can be as low as 32 KBPS. All you need to convert either the wav or the mp3 to a 32 or even 56 KBPS mp3 is the freeware program MusicMatch Jukebox. now Ya-bloody-hoo bastardised Ywhoo Jukebox
and soon possibly to be Microsoft Gatefold??
for a genuine old fiull issue Musicmatch go to:-
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=mmatch
Ignore their inapplicable apology and right click on the link to:-
MusicMatch Jukebox 10.00.2058 24MB
and download the full version 10
once you have it installed it you will find a "convert" item on its file menu
Piece of cake
Note that the wiki at:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_ra...bit_per_second
states quite categorically
"A kilobit per second (kbit/s or kb/s or kbps) is a unit of data transfer rate equal to 1,000 bits per second. It is sometimes mistakenly thought to mean 1,024 bits per second, using the binary meaning of the kilo- prefix, though this is incorrect."
which was news to me.
Also
that wiki defines :-
Most digital representations of audio are measured in kbit/s: (These values vary depending on audio data compression schemes)
  • 4 kbit/s – minimum achieved for encoding recognizable speech (using special-purpose speech codecs)
  • 8 kbit/s – telephone quality
  • 32 kbit/s – MW quality
  • 96 kbit/s – FM quality
  • 192 kbit/s – Nearly CD quality for a file compressed in the MP3 format
  • 1,411 kbit/s – CD audio (uncompressed, 16 bit samples × 44.1 kHz × 2 channels)
  • And importantly
'b' stands for 'bit' and 'B' stands for 'byte', where one byte refers to 8 bits.
I thought it worth putting that bit of information here for the unitiated amongst you!!

I sent him a request (Sometimes I Wish) but unfortunately he said I needed to provide him with a file so that he could listen to the song and upload it and I don't have a file in which I could do that. But maybe he'll have every song on there soon enough. (even Canarian Railroad Canoeoligy)

He has it on his To-Do list. I sent him the file, but it is with about 20 others. Keep checking Douglas.

I was really hoping that you would be at the concert tonight.

Hey Deal,

I have that entire concert on tape. The Bell Palsy thing happened in the early 70's and that concert was in the late 80's, if Im not mistaken. I should watch the entire concert for the precision of the date.

But you might be right, because he told Peter Gzowski in a TV interview in the 90's that he still has trouble to smile because of that Bells Palsy thing, {stroke of some sort}

Great idea Brink, the more he would post the better for all of us. I myself have lots of Lightfoot TV, appearances, interviews, etc... But haven't gotten around to even try to post them on You Tube.

Gord singing "My Love For You" at The Genie Awards, was a real gem. No guitar, very different performance than what we are use to seeing.

Any more snow Brink ?  :)

True, but one of the people who replied on youtube said it was Bell Palsy, so he must still have trouble every now and then.

Char - My first post , but I've been a viewer of the site for years. I wanted to let you know what I use to save Youtube videos. Its a free program. I'll post the link below. All you do is copy and past the URL into it and it saves it to your computer as an .AVI file. I'm also going to the Kitchener Show and Massey.

Amazing having realised that the last two videos Omer presented were not actually from the Stonewall Studios triumverate I looked at the youtube pages for them and I found that it looks like another keen Lighthead is following in Tom (Gahoendo)'s footsteps, viz
Mike uploading as "krazikritic" see:
http://www.youtube.com/user/krazykritik
Salute at
ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liGvLqGMhLA
(the first "h" omitted so you can see the URL)
is by krazykritik whose accompanying note says
"Dedicated to my inspirational friend Terrijane..thanks for your unconditional friendship & gentle words..you've been an awesome addition to my ever-growing circle of friends..this one's for YOU! From Gord's 1983 album 'Salute'..yet another Lightfoot masterpiece that showcased his musical expertise..but again was underated by the "music wannabes" who wrote what they call "ratings" and "professional critique"..again proving their narrow-mindedness within the realm of great musicians..Gord used this album to showcase his abilities with electric guitars and heavier percussion in back..without taking away one iota of his lyrical perfection and acoustical expertise..several other great cuts came from this release which one of them was the intensely moving song..and one of my top 5 GL favourites.."Someone To Believe In"..uploaded previously to this upbeat piece..hope you enjoy fireworks Terrijane..if not, I'd be more than happy to reupload it..with a different visual theme..in the meantime..turn it up loud and get grooving to "Salute".by the incomparable Gordon Lightfoot! krazykritik (lyrics follow) P.S. Please pick up "SALUTE" and the many other excellent valued cd's from Canada's own musical icon Gordon Lightfoot..thanks kk"
Likewise he has this to say about
Someone to Believe in
ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYD9sllAbXI
(the first "h" omitted so you can see the URL)
"you're welcome cj..did you subscribe to my vds?..I have a TON of GL coming over the next while..an I mean a TON!..many were almost impossible to find on mP3..so the majority will be brand new to YouTube..BUY GORDON LIGHTFOOT CD's..if you please..Mike "

"PLEASE READ! This fulfills an immense need..to share with whoever cares to watch and listen..a song that Gordon Lightfoot recorded..in 1983 on his album 'Salute'..the lyrics affected me profoundly and powerfully..with a psychological intensity I didn't even realize I was capable of..at that point in my existence..the 5 or 6 years surrounding this album release..were the darkest of my life..little did Gord know..how much his music served me in simply keeping me alive..it's only now I am able to share with others..what his artistic and lyrical insight really did in keeping me on this earth..Mr. Lightfoot's music spans my time in this world..in a purity of emotionality that has never been equalled..by any other artist of any craft..and is transcended only..by my relationship with my God Jehovah..he has no idea as to how much I truly and honestly feel I owe my life to him..I told him this once in a letter..which resulted in a two hour conversation over the phone which he initiated..he just wanted to humbly thank me..for the words of my tortured soul..that I had poured out to him..when all I had desired to do..was thank him..I am now proud to be able to call him my friend..thanks Gord..again..and thanks to all of the good folks I've met here..who have given me 'someone to believe in'..God Bless..Mike"
"Mike the "crazy critic" has also covered
Gordon Lightfoot - Rainy Day People - For Deb
(No not our "Colorado" Deb on the brink at all):-
Tom's version is
Rainy Day People - Gordon Lightfoot - V32 - for TomCat
Mike has this to say

"Dedicated to my dear friend Deb - berrygirl - whose had her own tough go of it lately..let the thoughts of spring rain..and Gord's soft lyrics..give rest to your mind and soul..I don't know if you're as big a fan of rain showers and dewdrops..as I am..but there's nothing that washes me thin..like walking in a spring or summer rain storm..they're as soothing and gentle as your friendship has been..to me and all your other frends..in our little YouTube group..enjoy it my dear friend.because you're worth it..Mike xo Rainy Day People Rainy day people always seem to know when it's time to call Rainy day people don't talk, they just listen till they've heard it all Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you.. they've been down like you Rainy day people don't mind if you're cryin' a tear or two If you get lonely, all you really need is that rainy day love Rainy day people all know there's no sorrow they can't rise above Rainy day lovers don't love any others, that would not be kind Rainy day people all know how it hangs on a piece of mind Rainy day lovers don't lie when they tell you, they've been down there too Rainy day people don't mind if you're cryin' a tear or two. Rainy day people always seem to know when you're feeling blue High stepping strutters who land in the gutters sometimes need one too Take it or leave it, or try to believe it If you've been down too long Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they just pass it on Rainy day lovers don't hide love inside they just pass it on "

PLUS

Gordon Lightfoot - The Circle Is Small - Endless Wire

"Subscriber request..a song by Gordon Lightfoot that tells a story about infidelity in a relationship..and the subsequent pain and heartbreak it can cause..I think he may have been singing about someone from his own past..never been able to confirm that..then again, he's already shared his awesome music and personal life stories through it..so whoever it's about should reman his own business..please go out and buy the cd this comes from..Endless Wire 1978..it was a "poorly rated" album..but undeservedly so as it truly reflects a time in Gord's life and career when he was in emotional turmoil..those who rated it low are "unfeeling jerks and thankless fools" for being too stupid to recognize that it TRULY reflects something deeper than Gord himself, despite the critics rude take on an album I deem to be "emotionally and psychologically masterful"..therefore his true fans love it that much more..it is one of my top 5 favourite albums of the 20+ he put out..because I knew what he was going through when he recorded it..and I love him for opening his soul to me through it..whether he knows it or not..Mike 'krazykritik' "
and:-
Gordon Lightfoot - You Are What I Am

"Rare Lightfoot!..Get up and dance to this great feel good 'TOON"..from his 1974 album..Old Dan's Records..YEEEEHHHAAWWWWWWW!!..kk Mike

Please remember to pick up "Old Dan's Records" on cd next time you're music shopping!..Gord desves the support and has ALWAYS appreciated every single fan he has"
Also
Gordon Lightfoot Re-Upload Pride of Man RARE!
"Reuploaded to fix some 'questionable' pictures and translations. Thanks to a "good friend" for their wisdom in helping me make the decision to do this.
Please pick up "Pride of Man" and other Gordon Lightfoot cd's..this song I believe is available on his United Artists collection as well as the compilation,,The United Artists Years..thanks Gord..Mike kk "
Mike has also done Sit Down Young Stranger and High And Dry
Amongst other videos on his channel I noticed one by Stevie Nicks and a rare knowledge of the Dutch group Focus see their great
Hocus Pocus:-

plus TheTijuana Brass, Neil Young and
Classical Gas & Love Is Blue Instrumental Journey
so he has an eclectic list of favourites

As an obvious Lighthead no doubt he is one of the visitors to this forum .If so Mike come out of the closet, do register as a corfiddler and post here to announce your plans for videos. the more the merrier I say!!!
